Ultrasonic tech could make wipers obsolete

McLaren developing windshields with high-frequency sound waves to repel water, insects

As part of its ongoing F1 development, British automaker McLaren plans to create a practical alternative to the traditional windshield wiper blade, Forbes reports.

The idea comes from existing fighter jet windshield-clearing tech, according to Frank Sephenson, chief designer at McLaren.

High-frequency sound waves around the windshield will act as an invisible shield, capable of repelling water, insects and anything else that comes anywhere near it.

YES!

I would pay extra for that.

Wiper blades are a pain.

What about the rest of the vehicle, I wanna make that obsolete too.

Those Jetson cartoons as a kid really were one big fat lie!  No wonder it all went downhill after that...

I've found rain-x to work quite well and a lot cheaper.

Windshield needs to be clean before applying Rain-X.  However, it does little good at speeds below about 40 mph.
I'm entitled (to be cranky).

The above is all true, the faster you go the better it works...not that that should be an inducement to go faster...I don't want nobody doing 60 in a residential area!

They also have a brand of washer fluid I buy, little more expensive than run of the mill stuff, but I like it.

One thing that drives me nuts are wiper blades that chatter across the glass. I've found the cheapest wiper blades actually work best in that regard. They just have to be replaced more often. I don't bother with the pricy Bosch wiper blades any more. Every set I've ever had stutters across the windshield and I find that infuriating.
