Living off the Grid will be Forbidden

City says it will let her stay if she can prove she can live without electricity and running water.  You know, like EVERYONE DID  100 years ago.

In the forested lands of the USA are countless abodes that are "off the grid" like my grandparents homestead which is far enough off the beaten track as to be miles from the nearest electric pole and maintained road.  It been that way for more than 100 years and isn't likely to change any time soon.

I'd turn it around and demand that the city prove I cannot live without their government water & electricity. I'd be within my rights to do that; the onus is on the accuser, not the defendant.

Hard to believe that being independent in the midst of a nanny state government could run cross-grain to their objectives. They obviously know what's best for us... NOT! Every government official/employee who had ANY connection to this needs to be fired on the spot, or worse.

At least my battle with the city has, for now, apparently resulted in acceptance of my resistance to a smart water meter.

I did not want the smart meters installed - it was supposed to be a choice.

I was out in the yard one afternoon and noticed that my electric meter, which is attached to the home, looked different. It was new; a smart meter.  I asked my husband that night why in the world did he let them in the backyard? He hadn't.

The Electric Company (or whomever) had obviously scaled our 7 foot, LOCKED fence, pacified the two dogs somehow, and installed that f'n meter!

I was livid. ::pullhair::  But, nothing I can do - no one will own up to having done it.

I'm pretty sure the water meter was replaced as well, but I haven't looked.

Me thinks you already know that answer CG --- CONTROL

Here in Jefferson county, the 'government powers' for years got the water and sewer dept. so deep in debt that law suits and money wasted by govt and 'fact finding lawyers' ran the debt to over $12 million.  To bail out they wanted to bill those on well /septic, plus increase rates of those on Birmingham City water [most of the northern part of county.  Those on well/septic fought and won [daughter included], but our rates are going up starting in 2014 to pay off their screwing us over.  Some good news though - some of those have gone to prison, but we still have to pay - off the debt estimated to be at least 10 years.   ::pullhair::
