LINKThis could be a joke but I suppose it isn't...
Mr. Weinstein then revealed his secret project about the gun rights group. “I shouldn’t say this, but I’ll tell it to you, Howard,” he said. “I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take this head-on. And they’re going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.”
The shock jock asked whether the film was going to be a documentary. Mr. Weinstein said no, that it would be a “big movie like a ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.’”
The movie mogul said his vision was to scare people away from firearms. He foresees moviegoers to leave thinking, “Gun stocks — I don’t want to be involved in that stuff. It’s going to be like crash and burn.”
This is laughable on its face.
Here you have a guy, a player...a major player, in an industry that makes literally billions of dollars every single year promoting gun violence in ways that are mostly pure fantasy, and he is saying this nonsense? Suddenly "hypocrite" seems a rather insufficient description.
And it's not as if H'wood hasn't done political agenda movies before. They do them all the time. And they suck. A lot. "Crash and burn," indeed.
If anything, the NRA will see a huge membership increase following this sort of nonsense. I mean, you have to remember that 2013 was the biggest year ever for gun and ammo sales. So big, in fact, that there were actual shortages of both. More people than ever have CC permits. More women than ever are buying guns and paying for self defense classes in their use. More states are becoming more and more gun owner friendly. Heck, it was only a little over a week ago that the chief of police of Detroit was telling people that citizen ownership of guns deterred crime. Guns are more popular than ever.
And remember one of the last big budget liberal advocacy films? The one that immediately comes to mind is "The Day After Tomorrow" where global warming suddenly and almost instantly caused the entire northern hemisphere to become covered in glaciers. Utter nonsense and it changed no minds...it had zero effect on the discussion of AGW.
So, no...this is not going to gain traction with anyone other than the natural target audience, those people who are already convinced that an inanimate object is inherently evil and capable of turning otherwise reasonable, rational and law-abiding humans into raving, maniacal killing machines. It will be liberal porn and that's all it will be.
Footnote: I will admit that "The China Syndrome" probably is more than a little responsible for killing the nuclear energy industry in the USA. If they have a successful lib advocacy movie I suppose that it would be that one. But that is the only one that I can think of. The rest have been utter flops both at the box office and at the voting booth.
Second Footnote: I seem to remember that Streep has been filmed shooting guns at people. I can think of at least two such instances. The first one I remember is her blasting Goldie Hawn with a shotgun in "Death Becomes Her" and the other one would be her plugging Kevin Bacon in "The River Wild." So yeah, bring it on. Can't wait to discuss those and perhaps others.
Third Footnote: Yep, two more movies. One I've never heard of called "Plenty" and of course there is "Out of Africa"
