Medical Device Tax?

Who knew a fishing rod was a medical device?

CABELA'S
Medical Excise Tax on Retail Receipts?

This is an image of a sales receipt from Cabela's, a popular sporting goods store

The 2.3% Medical Excise Tax that began on January 1st is supposed to be "hidden" from the consumer, but it's been brought to the public's attention by hunting and fishing store Cabela's who have refused to hide it and are showing it as a separate line item tax on their receipts, the email states.

I did some research and found directly from the IRS's website information that PROVES this to be true and an accurate portrayal of something hidden in Obamacare that I was not aware of! Now being skeptical of this I went to the IRS website and found this!

Q1. What is the medical device excise tax? A1. Section 4191 of the Internal Revenue Code imposes an excise tax on the sale of certain medical devices by the manufacturer or importer of the device.

Q2. When does the tax go into effect? A2. The tax applies to sales of taxable medical devices after Dec. 31, 2012.

Q3. How much is the tax? A3. The tax is 2.3 percent of the sale price of the taxable medical device. See Chapter 5 of IRS Publication 510, Excise Taxes, and Notice 2012-77 for additional information on the determination of sale price.  IRS.gov <http://irs.gov/> <http://irs.gov/>

Chapter Five http://www.irs.gov/publications/p510/ch05.html <http://www.irs.gov/publications/p510/ch05.html>

So being more curious I clicked on "Chapter 5 Of IRS Publication 510."

And what do I find under "MEDICAL DEVICES" under "MANUFACTURERS TAXES"?

The following discussion of manufacturers taxes

Applies to the tax on:

Sport fishing equipment;

Fishing rods and fishing poles;

Electric outboard motors;

Fishing tackle boxes;

Bows, quivers, broad heads, and points;

Arrow shafts;

Coal;

Taxable tires;

Gas guzzler automobiles;

and

Vaccines.

We have been fooled again, if we believe that the Affordable Care Act is all about health care.  It is a monstrous law that will ration health care while bankrupting the country.  It also appears to be a law with a whole lot of taxes that we the people have yet to be made aware of.

It is a political con to gain more control.  It is also a method to obtain more taxes for the liberals to buy the votes of the ignorant and uninformed and those who want something for nothing.

I guess it’s just like Nancy Pelosi said, "We have to pass it to see what is in it."  Well, what is next?  What else is there we do not know about?  Where is the press?  O yes, it's in the tank for Obama.

Please pass this on

Snopes claims no..

http://www.snopes.com/politics/taxes/medicaldevice.asp

and yes I have skepticism, but in this case that publication doesn't seem to be an  Obamacare thing. . Only that other excise taxes are in effect..

I don't trust Snopes to affirm anything related to Obama. They are in his hip pocket.

I guess Snopes would have us believe this is a big nothingburger since it's actually only applied on stuff like pacemakers and insulin pumps. It's really just another assault on the aged, since older people are the main ones using medical devices. Combine that with the fact that funding is moved from Medicare to Medicaid, and you get another example of what Ann Coulter has always said: to know what liberals think just look at what they accuse conservatives of. Remember Alan Grayson's little flip chart show where he grandstands and accuses Republicans of just wanting old people to "DIE. QUICKLY!"? Yeah. That'd be the actual policy objectives of his own party.

Kudos to Cabela for refusing to bury the tax in the price.

We will never know the true amount of taxes that are buried in the price of something,  and making sellers figure that amount out,  of course would be burdensome.    UGH

The IRS needs to be abolished and the fair tax put in.   Then people would know what taxes they are paying.  Maybe then people would finally get mad at the amount we are really paying.    Because that amount is way higher then most people are lead to believe.

There used to be a gas station near me that had a break down posted on all the pumps. I always wondered why more stations didn't do that.

I don't know why they don't either.   Gas station owners especially.   They make less per gallon then the government does,  but yet nobody seems to know that.   Granted the profit (if any, sometimes gas is a loss leader for a convenience store) wouldn't be posted.  In a state like Illinois you are also paying gas taxes (put your mind around that one) on an gas tax collected by a different unit of government (like local, county, state and fed).

But anyway,  we already live on less then half of our annual income as it is as taxes eat up more and more every year.   And that should be a huge scandal.

Yeah, every year a group calculates the date the average person finally begins earning for themselves. Last I heard it was well into May, and that's the average. It might be into June by now.

It is indeed scandalous that half of a person's productivity is just eaten up by government right off the bat. Idiots like Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Schumer get on these sanctimonious soap boxes about how it's government that makes all that productivity possible in the first place. They love to cite the high visibility stuff government does, like roads and fire departments and the Air Force. Never any mention of the byzantine bureaucracy with its overlapping agencies looking for something to do.

And news to Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Schumer: the root word of "government" is "govern", a verb meaning to impose rules and order. Impose on what? Why, the "what" in that question would indicate that it preexists government. They can take that "somebody else made that happen" sanctimony and shove it right up their parasitic asses.

I know that group.   Americans for Tax Reform.   They don't seem to be doing that study anymore, as they have abandoned that website.     The last year they published it in 2011 it was August 12.    It had been in July until Obama came into office (go figure).
