At first, I was like WTF?

http://www.collectorsfirearms.com/ibm-corp-m1-30-carbine-caliber-carbine-r9130/#.UwttVvKPfEk

I saw the pic of this M1 with all this crap on it.

Then started reading about it.

Quote
IBM Corp M1 .30 Carbine caliber carbine. (R9130)
IBM Corp M1 .30 Carbine caliber carbine. 1943 dated M-1 carbine sniper. This is a rare model variation with the early lower mount for the infrared below the stock. This was decided to be an inferior mount as it was too low. The Army then decided to send out a kit so you could attach an infrared unit on the top of the scope as are all of the later infrared snipers. Gun is about excellent with a 1943 dated IBM barrel. Very scarce rig with both infrared units.

Pretty cool! No mention if they work, though.

See. It just goes to show you...never just get rid of anything!   There's money in old stuff!  Especially unique items.  ;)

Definitely cool! ::thumbsup::

These were the first real night vision devices fielded by the US military.  They were developed primarily as a countermeasure to Japanese tactics of nighttime infiltration of defensive positions, and introduced in the latter half of the war.  This system on the M1 Carbine was also used during the Korean War.  By Vietnam technology had improved so that active illumination was no longer required, though the Starlight system of the Vietnam era did still require a lot of ambient moon and star light to be useful.

Guys like Mahwinney, Waldron & Hathcock would be familiar with the Starlight system.

Funny, not much out there about guys who used this early system.

Stumbled across this though...once a sniper...

I've seen that before. Once a sniper, always a sniper. ::USA::
