Best / Worst Car you've had
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:51:23 AM »
From another site also, but could be fun;

1957 Plymouth - Commercial

Lies - all LIES  It wasn't mine - My dad got one and guess who got to drive it most of the time - yep ME. [ Long before 'lemon laws', but this wasn't lemon, it was the whole tree ].

Straight stick, 6 cylinder.  Transmission didn't make it home the night we bought it - replacement still didn't get us home 4 days later.  After next replacement trans stuck in 2nd and only way to make it into 3rd you had to call a weight lifter to shift the damn thing, so another replacement. Finally got a trans that worked - three days later engine overheated and caught fire, so yep new engine.  After that it was almost a car- except for the rust - boy the color of nature as seen through holes made by rust, and the seat covers that disappeared really brought out the best looking foam you ever saw.  Where paint didn't dissappear from rust, it peeled off in chunks leaving the prettiest metal and rust camouflage you can imagine.  But on the bright side - our high school auto shop had a specimen for learning -- [how not to built cars].  The happiest day of my life - when dad donated it to the junk yard - but it probably gave them a bad name cause they went out of business less than a year later.

Damn look what I just found - think it might be 'it's' twin only difference this had 8 clyinder and color [I think].   ::whatgives::

My worst car was a 1985 Buick Century LTD. It was a relatively pretty car for its class (GM "A" Class - Olds Cutlass Sierra/Pontiac 6000/Chevy Celebrity/Buick Century). But besides the look it was a real PoS. Neither the engine or tranny made it past 100K.

The worst part about it was the fact that the interchangeability of parts from the GM A-Class vehicles made them the #1 target for thievery in the mid 80s. My Century was stolen THREE TIMES in under 6 months, but for some reason, it was abandoned and returned to me by police after it had been vandalized. I was dreadfully disappointed every time it came back. I just wanted the thieves to take it once and for all so I could get the insurance money and start over.

Worst.  1987 Cavalier Z24

Coolest interior up to that time.  The problem was, it didn't work very often, and the problem was always misdiagnosed.  Looking back 25 years, it is now known that there was a problem with moisture getting on the contacts.  At the time they kept replacing the cluster, and you can't do that past 60,000 miles without paying up a load.  Plus, it cost about $26,000 in today's dollar equivalent.  Only a couple thousand less than

2013 Mazda CX-5 with all the trimming.  ::thumbsup::

Heh, picking on GM products!

85 Olds Cutlass Supreme...as in Supreme POS!  Underpowered dog, transmission wasn't worth a rats behind...man, what a pile! Ate parts like monster.

But it was a champ compared to my fathers 79 Chyrsler LaBaron!  While I thought my Olds was dog slow, the Iacoca crap would still be only 1/3 down an expressway on-ramp when I would be merged into traffic already!

We are now where The Founders were when they faced despotism.

Worst car: 1978 Chevy Impala Station Wagon.

Best car: Today's cars we have; my wife's 2003 Honda CRV and my 2007 Honda Ridgeline. Our 1997 Ford F-150 was (and still is [our son has it]) also a good vehicle.

My ties for best car are our 2000 Ford Excursion SUV and our 1999 Toyota Camry. The Camry is just shy of 300K miles, and only in the last 20K or so have we been hearing the engine loosen up and rattle a bit. The Excursion has about 270K, and it is a workhorse. The engine sounds great. I've had some front-end trouble with it, but that's about it. Neither vehicle has had any engine or tranny issues.

We had a 1987 Camry and it was excellent. 4 cyl with standard tranny. We got almost 45 MPG from Chicago to Buffalo, NY.

Sold it when the floorboards got so rusted out that you could see the road underneath the car. That was in 1999 at about 165K miles.

This one made the other lists, as it was a decent car for being 10 years old and 100,000 miles.  Plus, a lot of um, memorable moments happened in it.   ::angel::

My worst was a mid-60's year Ford station wagon.  If I was out in it and it started raining, it would backfire, blow out the muffler and stall.  If I was in and it started raining, I wasn't going anywhere.  Dad did the "mechanic's family" thing on it -- meaning a lick and a promise -- and missed the hairline crack in the distributor cap.  (Thank your father, kids.)

Oh, yeah, and the floor compartment waay in the back rusted out on the bottom, dumping my "car emergency kit", a vinyl pillow, a length of chain, and my tire iron on Rte. #1 at about 60 mph.

I have two bests -- I loved my '89 Escort; first new car I ever had (I got tired of begging Dad to fix stuff) but it only lasted until 2001.  The trans went, we had it replaced, then it went again and something else broke, so we gave up and got the F150.  Lu' mah truck.

In truth, I beat that Escort to death; it got all the maintenance it needed, but I drove it like it was a rented mule.

My best and worst car was the same one.
I bought a new 74 MGB. (From a dealer 50 miles from home.
On my way home from my 1000 mile check up, the throttle cable broke causing the dual carbs to go completely out of adjustment.
I was 4 miles from home

Had to tow it all the way back.
Dealer didn't stand behind it.

Fuel pumps.
In 50K miles, I had 5 fuel pumps on it.
I learned to carry a spare and was able to change them like a pit crew.

However, I loved the car.
It was a really fun drive on our windy, hilly country roads.

Lots of faster muscle type cars on the straight but I could take hairpin turns at full speed.

It was a chick magnet.
Girls had to be real friendly to have memorable moments.
There were friendly girls even though it was a 2 seater

My worst was a one year old '57 Chevy 6 cyl stick, engine overhauled before it came home.  Vacuum wipers stopped on every hill.  Replace with a new '59 Plymouth the next summer.  That lasted all through college + a couple of years.

Top candidate for worst ever was a friends '57 Sunbeam - it lost a drag race to a road grader.

I had a 57 Chevy Bel Air.
My first car.
Dad gave it to me after he wore it out and got another one.
Wish I had it now.

Have owned five Chevy Luminas. They are great cars. They keep going with little maintenance for over 300k miles each.  The next is the Toyota Corolla I got my wife. It too keeps going and going.  Worst was a ford sedan. Didn't even make it home when I bought it.

My best and worst is the same vehicle as well...

1978 Bronco
400m engine
Auto trans.

The good:
14 mpg city w/33" tires
Enough torque to move small cities
Enough room for 27 people
Leather buckets up front from a 2000 Mustang
Learned how to rebuild Holley carbs with one hand, blind-folded (see the bads lol)

The bad:
Would not keep a timing set long enough to hardly bother with changing them
Timing set issues don't go well with Holley carburetors
Approximately 40% of rear quarter panels remained non see-through
Wife didn't like "old car smell" from aforementioned quarter panels

I've had a lot of cars - and a lot of heartaches. My first was a '62 MG Midget that I built from two wrecks. I spent more time working on it than I did driving it. I had a '63 Buick Riviera that had one whole side stove in but from the inside it looked and drove like a million bucks. I had an endless string of vans including one that could do 115.

I think the one that was the hardest on me was a Ford LTD (or an LTE or an LSD or something like that). It was about an '87 or so and had a 3.8l V6 that was notorious for blowing head gaskets. I personally did three. And I know that the engine wasn't a virgin when I tore it down for the first one. A battery (stranded me in the dead of winter when I needed to pick up Random), an alternator (went out in the middle of the summer, stranding me) and the catalytic converter (which got plugged up from all the blown head gaskets). I took an axe handle to the converter and converted it ;')

It was during a period when I was scratching to get my and really could just use a break - but that those kind of breaks. I actually lit the match that I was going to use to set it ablaze one day - I was that close to the edge. But I didn't, and I cobbled it together good enough to make it presentable for sale. I let it go cheap and was pretty frank about my adventures with it to the buyer. The kid who bought it didn't care. Good riddance.

I too had an Escort for a bit. I paid $300 for it and drove it for three years putting only gas and oil in it. Then I sold it for....$300. The way I look at it the Escort made up for the LTD.

Fuel pumps.
I had the same problem with my MG. But I was too poor to buy a replacement so I went to the boneyard for a used part (2nd home for a lot of years). Naturally there was a dearth of MG's to pick from so I looked about and found an electric pump that was resting in a '55 Chevy.

I took it home and piped it up, hopped in and headed off down the road. I didn't get too far before the pump, out of a '55 Chevy, a '55 Chevy that had once sported a small-block, started overflowing the sidedraft carbs with raw fuel. Engine flooded, I had to improvise to get it home. I accomplished that by yanking the power from the B+

Of course a block later I ran out of gas so I had to stop, lift the hood, and reconnect the pump. Then run it til it flooded and yank the wire.

When I finally made it home I wired up a toggle switch as a workaround until I could figure out how to solve the problem. The auto parts guy told me that I needed a fuel regulator but it was almost as expensive as a Lucas pump so, until I could find a more suitable replacement pump I just left it with the switch. I got used to toggling it once a minute so that the buggy could get some gas.

I have had good luck with cars..

My first car was a 68 Camaro (non rally sport - only had a 327 engine. I have never seen another)  hand-me-down  I was allowed to use (sucks huh)  I was probably conceived in it, but neither parent would admit to that. The LACK of seatbelts  saved my mothers life - it was side swiped and my mother was thrown to the other side of the car. The door was in the drivers seat.  It was repaired and I never had any issued with it.  My mother ( a libtard) sold it to a dealer on a trade-in while I was at a concert. It was, after all her car, but I, and my cousins never forgave her for not offering someone the chance to buy it.

The care she traded it for?  A Pontiac J2000.  Never heard of it?  Yeah. Didn't expect so.  I called it the golf cart. It lost a fuel pump on me once.  But then, I didn't own it.

After I left for College, my mother got rid of it because my libtard sister had to have something  better - a Chevy Sprint.   I drove that to my summer job all though college (lawnmowing) , and ended up driving it most of the time when my sister left to spend a year in Europe. A Cowbow action figure went through one of my mowers and he only lost his hat.  After that "Dangerous Bob" as he was dubbed sat on the dash and protected that car.. That little 3 cylinder rubber band engine did really well when you were the only one in the car ( with 4 it was less impressive) got 40+ mpg,  and ran for 300,000  without major issues ( CV boots needed to be replaced once)  before my sister finally sold it.

Then I borrowed my mothers Jeep Cherokee Limited ( it was the new hand me down) - 22 mpg, 4 wheel drive- and best jeep I have ever owned. That one ened up with a step sister and is still going ( without major problems)  at 180K.

Finally I grew up, got a job and bought a toyota truck.  Served me well till the woman I was dating rolled it driving home on ice while I was drunk.  That woman came to be my wife, and whenever she gave me crap about my driving, I would ask her how many cars she has rolled.. but that  stopped working when I rolled or 2008 Dodge Dakota  with the whole family inside ( just after I was saying how much I liked that truck..) - of course no one was hurt. Not a bruise. So, yeah, it was a good truck. We bought another- same year and model, but something with the suspension isn't as good as the old one..not bad, but not as good.

After the toyota we bought another Jeep Cherokee. Other than having the annoying habit of draining batteries when it sits unused ( by design I might add)  that one is now the Off-Road, "I really don't want to take my shiny truck up this " hunting  vehicle.  Its been my "worst car" - actually loosing an engine bracket and trying to bounce the transmission and engine block out of the car, and for some reason it just needs more work than everything else,  but  it hasn't been a bad car. Nothing ever got broken so bad it needed a tow. but it smells pretty badly of wood rat now ( one made a home there)  but its over 180K now and still running, or would be if I fished the mouse out of the coolant reservoir and put a new battery in

Michelle's car was a ford festiva she had bought from her sister. After we bought the jeep it became my "get to the airport and back" car..  That little bucket us ugly and load, but never broke down. The pressure in the engine was wrong- it blew the cap right off - so Michelle's  solution was -- to leave it off. And it ran fine. Yes, the engine compartment was messy but it leaked surprisingly little oil and ran really well - but 250K on it before we donated it to Big Brothers of Denver.

And then we Bought a 2000 Saturn  LS new.  I like rubber band engines.  Again, no major problems. Still gets 40+ mpg ,   almost 100K, not a single major problem. Even the battery lasted 2 years longer than it should have.  Its a great commuter car, and goes well with one person. Again not so stellar with 4 , but good enough.

Knock on wood they will also continue to  be trouble free.

Of course the car I miss but I could never justify replacing?  that 68 Camaro.
