I believe it was either Rush or Mark Steyn who postulated "any institution or organization not specifically and explicitly established under conservative ideology will in the course of time become liberal". It's true. Organizations always take on a life of their own, and different members of the leftist army are tasked with taking them over.
Look at the supposedly religious colleges and universities. How many of them are linked to their associated faith in any meaningful sense? Georgetown, a Catholic institution? You mean the same Georgetown that gave us the whole Sandra Fluke nonsense? It's not just the Catholic ones either. Wake Forest is ostensibly a Baptist university, they even call themselves the Deacons, but you would find it no different than any other university -- its administrators and faculty are loyal servants of the Left. Duke University, the same.
What they call "secular humanism" has gone from being a philosophy of intellectual inquiry freed from theological constraint, to what it is now and that's an entire religion unto itself. It isn't a lack of theology, it is a theology. Instead of worshiping a deity, they worship the State. It has its very own clerical and priestly caste, who busy themselves deciding what is sinful, what cannot be thought let alone uttered, and doling out the punishments on transgressors. It has practically all the characteristics of a religion other than professing the supernatural.
