So I wonder what prescription our all-knowing betters in the progressive echo chamber have for decorative and special use bulbs that cannot feasibly accommodate the ballast base of CFLs. What about the light in your oven? Your fridge? What about the small base bulbs in your chandelier?

Are they going to graciously grant us exceptions for those applications, or perhaps they will just mandate that we purchase new Green-certified ovens and refrigerators from -- who else -- GE?

I'm not a fan of GE anyway.  Years ago our freezer broke and even though we had a maintenance agreement they were a btch about it.  There was one service tech I wouldn't let back in my house. My husband thought he broke another part of it trying to fix it when the man tried to blame me for it. We went through 3 or 4 techs before GE offered to replace at a discount instead of free replacement. A year later the replacement broke. Haven't bought a GE appliance since then.

My brother interviewed at GE corporate and they yanked him around for 6 months on whether they were going to hire--even flew him out--he stopped keeping in touch and got a job somewhere else.  He's too conservative for that place anyway.

GE went downhill once Jack Welch left the company (retired).

GE went downhill once Jack Welch left the company (retired).

It did, but it's always had it's snout in our pockets, even under Welch. In fact, IIRC, he was at the helm when this made its way through Congress, wasn't he?

But this whole charade is proof positive that the gov't only knows how to exacerbate things. These bulbs were supposedly going to reduce the amount of Hg in the environment by reducing the output of power stations (coal puts out the bulk of Hg, I think), thereby lowering the levels. But as we all know, the less responsible citizens amongst us, ya' know, the moochers and looters, will just toss these right in the trash and in 10-20 yrs, we'll have mercury levels so high entire regions will have related health issues.

And there will be absolutely no redress. No company will be held responsible and certainly .gov will simply say "We already took care of it by giving you free health care!"

Not sure about the legislation, but Welch retired almost 10 years ago, in September '01.

I trust that the Republicans in Congress have placed a high priority on repealing this nonsense.

Right?
We are so far past and beyond the “long train of abuses and usurpations” that the Colonists and Founders experienced and which necessitated the Revolutionary War that they aren’t even visible in the rear-view mirror.

A bit of a quote of LadyVirginia:

Quote
Lots of calls to the mayor might be more effective than calling a US congressman who already thinks he has too much to do.

It was US congressmen who didn't think they had "too much to do", led by a Republican -- Fred Upton -- who passed this POS.

To answer your question, Rickl:  Yeah, right.  Don't count on it.  This same Republican, who previously championed the aforementioned bill turned around and trash-talked it in order to get himself appointed Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

They make me sick.
