I kinda like Tal Wilkenfeld who plays(ed) bass for Jeff Beck. I think she started playing for him when she was 19 or 20.

She's awesome. Cute too.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Mike Oldfield is a bit of an acquired taste, but I figured I would throw it out there. He is the "Exorcist theme" guy, but he really has constantly grown and changed over his career - changing genre and style - so don't listen to this ( which is sort of irsih folksy I guess) and think its typical of him..  there is music typical of certain periods.. some is very early new age, some more European Punk . Some albums are all pop songs, others are full side instrumentals. Amarok  is a full 50 minute instrumental that basically defies description - though many have told me "crap" is the right word.. but its my favorite.. I just like he has never been afraid to leave the comfort zone of where he has been successful commercially. ( He also sucks at singing, so he always has someone else do that.. in this case this really faggy guy..probably someone I am supposed to know - but don't and don't care enough to find out)

His Music of the Sphere's album is unfortunately is only excursion into full classical music with symphony orchestra.. but play it for people who are familiar with classical music and they will start throwing out famous classic composers trying to figure out who it is..  .

I was somewhat surprised.  I figured my natural Music Horizon would be 1988 - the year I graduated High School. But listening all the way from the beginning ( 1958) I decided I actually didn't like much of anything after 1986, but nearly everything before.. but my dad listened to nothing but "oldies" so I did in fact grow up listening to it all.   I was surprised. Music had already turned to crap before I even graduated and I hadn't even noticed.

I'm not sure what I think about this.  For one thing, Painkiller probably isn't the best song for a female or a 64 year old guy.  But there's still some awesome in Baby Metal + Rob Halford.

Yeah, a bit odd...but the younglings were having a good time with the old dude and the old dude seemed to get into it and the crowd had fun so...what the heck, I think it worked.

Another band enters the final stage of their career.  I've noticed the typical evolution of a band goes from

1.  Doing what they do to gain popularity.
2.  Trying to "grow" by keeping hip.  You can name countless bands in this.  REM, U2, Metallica, many others.  Some call it their Fat Elvis stage.  There are exceptions, AC/DC and Iron Maiden pretty much did the same thing over their careers.
3.  Those that do go Fat Elvis, and live longer than Elvis, eventually go back to what made them popular to begin with.  REM ended their career with two good albums, U2 gave up "growing" and are putting out good albums, again.  And Metallica?  The Metallica of St. Anger and the Lou Reed album?

Good stuff.

Nothing like good skull-crushing metal or butt-kickin' R&R to get the blood moving!

I think your stages are probably right...for some the Fat Elvis stage isn't so bad, some sell out to popularity more than most while for some "getting popular" didn't necessarily mean going too far off the rails.  And for those that strayed a bit too far it is nice when they return home!

New Mike Oldfield full-song-per side acoustic album on sale in January. A return to the style of his first three albums apparently. Sorta excited about that. Mike has been hit or miss for me lately, but  I suspect I will like this one.

You can hear a clip at about the 2:12 mark

He is relatively unknown in the United States, but you may have seen him perform at the UK Olympics opening - he did music for that NHS rah rah show..
