My first AR build
« on: December 31, 2014, 10:31:19 PM »
I just finished building my first AR.  I bought my Colt AR15A4 a few months ago, but that just whet my appetite for doing a home build.  It was a fun process and not too difficult.  Everyone should build one  ::thumbsup::

For this build I used the following:

Lower receiver: Spike's Tactical with color fill pictogram markings

Barreled upper assembly: Palmetto State Armory with 16" cold hammer forged barrel

Lower parts kit: Spike's Tactical

Bolt carrier group: Spike's Tactical milspec

Handguard: Magpul MOE, gray

Stock: Magpul CTR, gray

Grip: Magpul, gray

Rear sight: Magpul MBUS

Now all I need to do is shoot it  ::cool::

Beautiful. Impressive.
In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.

Good job Glock 32! Any interesting tools make it easier such as the AR wrench etc...?

Thanks all.  I have somewhere just under $700 in it.  In retrospect I could have built it cheaper, because in the process I discovered some places that sold parts I had already bought for a good bit less than I originally paid. Two of the best resources for me were palmettostatearmory.com and primaryarms.com. A couple of things I bought directly from Spike's were also available at Primary Arms but for less.

Warp, there's a couple of tools that make it easier.  You do need the AR wrench to tighten down the castle nut on the buffer tube.  You would also need an additional wrench if you wanted to assemble your own barrel and upper receiver. Usually you can find an AR armorer's wrench that has all the special tools made into one.  Other tools that made this easier were a vise block, which latches into the mag well of the lower and allows you to mount the whole assembly in a bench vise. This also doubled as a block to lay the receiver on when driving roll pins.  I also bought a set of starter punches with hollow ends that made it easier to get the roll pins squared and started.

I pretty much followed this guy's demo, it was very helpful:

Great job and it looks beautiful. But it looks like the rear and front sights don't quite match up. Since I don't know jack about AR's, what are your plans for the front sight?

Yes it's a flip up rear sight.  In the deployed position it lines up correctly with the front sight.  I'm going to put some kind of optics on it, so the flip up sight is just a backup.

Roger that. I don't know why I didn't think of it. I was thinking it was a peep sight. ::bashing::

Nice!  And that cost is less than l thought it would be.  After l satisfy some of my other SHTF preps l might make a run at a project like this.
