Federals new .380 99gr HST HP
« on: July 31, 2015, 01:42:01 PM »
Yeah, the chatter still swirls over .380 too light, no penetration, hard to expand...but this new round is performing better and may be marginally better than Critical Defense and Gold Dots which I also have sitting on the bottom of the lake...there is criticism of 10" not meeting the 12" FBI threshold and issues going through denim...but in Glock's and Bersa's I think that should be less of an issue than with the pocket-pistol models.  Let's face it, a pocket-pistol is a backup pistol for most people, but in a model with a greater than 3" barrel I think in warm weather carry a .380 can be a good primary carry weapon.

Anyway, best deals I saw so far are:

For a 50 round box - http://www.ammunitiondepot.com/Federal-Premium-380-ACP-99-Grain-HST-HP-P380HST1-p/p380hst1.htm

For a 20 round box - http://ammunitionstore.com/products/380-acp-9x17-ammo-99gr-hst-jhp-federal-premium-p380hst1s-20-round-box.html

For a case (200) - http://ammunitionstore.com/products/380-acp-9x17-ammo-99gr-hst-jhp-federal-premium-p380hst1s-200-round-case.html

HST is one of the best hollow point designs ever.  It is my preferred defensive ammo.  I would get some in .380 if I didn't already have quite a bit of Gold Dot and Critical Defense.

The 12" threshold was chosen because 12 inches in ballistic gelatin corresponds to real world performance that is likely to reach vitals under a variety of non-optimal conditions (heavily clothed assailant, oblique shot that goes through an arm first, etc).  For defensive use by private citizens though, I think 10" is not bad, especially in that caliber.

I agree, on all points.

I too have plenty of GD and CD at the bottom of the lake.
