I guess I did miss that thread.

So...you did what? Accidentally installed malware?

No, I don't think so.  Where did you get that from?
We are so far past and beyond the “long train of abuses and usurpations” that the Colonists and Founders experienced and which necessitated the Revolutionary War that they aren’t even visible in the rear-view mirror.

Yep. Worth it ;-)

Last week I got one of those scareware fake virus-scanner bugs. Had a devil of a time getting rid of it. And here I am right back on the same interwebby that infected me!  ::gaah::

Honestly, that's what led me to

Still, just too many nastys come through banner ads, which is where I always used to get them

Okay, I guess I have no idea what's going on. Nevermind.
In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.

It's all explained there.  Apparently it was a solder issue with the motherboard, not an infestation of any kind.

It happened just now, at Google images.  That place is a rat hole of viruses and scams.

Clicked an image and a red screen comes up MOZILLA HAS FOUND...! CLICK HERE!  I did so and as it was "scanning"
I reconsidered it the same scam under the guise of Mozilla and cut it off.   AVG has scanned over 1,000,000 objects and so far I'm clean.

and no it wasn't porn, I was looking for a fairy  gif for another comment ::speechless::

ETA: Scan complete, 0 problems.
note: Whether it appears as a new page or a pop up it looks very legitimate.

Rule of thumb, never click anything in a window that pops up without you initiating the popup. Browsers block most of the conventional methods of unwanted popups, but new ones are always being devised. Same goes for email attachments. I've had to clean up several iterations of the "XP Security" malware on my users' machines over the past few weeks. Some people will open up anything. It's like Dracula, you have to invite him in, but once you do you're in trouble.

I've been experiencing dynamic popups on the left side of the screen - the advertisment variety - and when you scroll the screen, they stay in place. It looks like the web pages that I'm browsing is doing it, but i can't find a way to make them stop. Any ideas out there?

You could try Ad Block if you're using Firefox. There are similar plug-ins for other browsers.

I'm using IE9, and not really sure what it is, since this is something new that I'm seeing. :(

Another rule of thumb...be careful when entering a search parameter for "fairy"!
