I picked my son and daughter-in-law up at the airport last night. They just returned from 17 days in the Philippines. Thursday night, they stayed at a hotel right across the street from the Resort World Casino. His wife is Filipina and he speaks enough of the language to get by. He saw a vehicle flipped over and burning.

What the government is telling you about the incident is 100% bullsh*t. "32 deaths from 'smoke inhalation.' Bullsh*t. Look, prior to this, they have armed security all over the place, especially in hotels frequented by tourists. The Duterte government has a vested interest in tamping this thing down. If they lose foreign investments or tourist dollars in Manila, they are screwed.

I will update if I find out anything else.
The problems we face today are there because the people who work for a living

Sounds like Muslim terror is even worse in the Philippines then even Europe.   They are on the front line for sure.

I don't know what to think about this.  The whole story is just bizarre.  Al is right.  Even the smallest of business' have armed guards, let alone casinos.  And a guy is going to be let loose to run around throwing gas on everyone, lighting them up?  Doesn't wash.

In my year there there was only one Muslim incident in Manila.  A bomb by the embassy, but it was placed in a trashcan by the street so it would have only hurt locals on the main road, if it would have gone off.  Not the brightest bulb.

Good to be in a Muslim free place, now, where the worst thing I have to deal with is with the worst rains in decades.  22" in 2 days at my place, with another day of this.  Not a real problem as I am up from sea level, and the flooding.

The highest totals are now over 50".

It didn't smell right to me from the start, and yeah I understand not causing a panic among prospective tourists, but there is more to this story than we are getting that is certain...it has the stink of somebody inside knowing more than they are telling.  Time will tell perhaps.

Are you in Taipei, Todd?  Never been to Taiwan.

Technically, New Taipei City.  Getting used to no beggars (a lot of buskers, though, some very bad  ::laughonfloor::  ).

This place is so civilized the news needs to keep finding stories to report, when not going 24x7 on the rains.  For example, a 5 minute story, reported from multiple locations, over an apartment ad taped onto the inside of a subway car.  That's illegal.  That is how boring Taiwan is, crime wise.  That's also why the subway cars stay clean and brand new looking, due to harsh laws eating, drinking, and leaving things inside.

Interesting, so what do those street performers do for legal tender?  Playing the usual instruments or something more local/traditional?

Some traditional and they're usually pretty good and often I'll hit the tip jar.  Some guitar singer types.  The worst I ever saw was a very bad teen sax player working a mega rest stop off a freeway.  He'd sit there sulking until his dad would prod him into playing a song.  Very badly.   ::laughonfloor::
