USS Fitzgerald collision...7 sailors missing

Not good, new Skipper, somebody messed up bad to not see traffic that large so close.

Lost at sea not good...even if on watch on a weather deck and equipped with vest and light...it's a big ocean, and at night and if not conscious....

Ugh!

Likely gone, prayers for loved ones of the seven.   ::praying::

Our hearts and prayers go out to the families.

But I have to ask since I've never been in the military.

With all of the modern technology on board a U.S. destroyer, just how the f^*k does this happen?

I do not know Alan...they have GPS, back in my day it was a SINS or some such thing...everything an acronym of course...Ship Inertial Navigation System...something like that...anyway...air and sea radar...there are digital scopes and I think people still man some weather deck watches...

I don't get it...more than one person I suspect will catch hell for this...and the loss of life really makes it career-ending and possible time in Leavenworth...

The other ship rammed the destroyer.  Why aren't we hearing more how and WHY that happened?

True enough...but I don't know how the OOD on duty and his crew could lose track of something that large getting that close...all ships track each others position, but a warship should always be in a higher state of awareness, and it increases in intensity at regular intervals as proximity increases.  No excuse on either end, but I expect more from a USN vessel than a commercial tub.

It's looking like that whoever was in charge, failed at a level not seen since the Exxon Valdez.

Update -

CO, XO & Chief of the Boat relieved...other "officers" also relieved of duty...

http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=102002

And it is interesting to note 7th Fleet CO Adm Aucoin cited "inadequate leadership" when relieving them...what with another ship under his command suffering another collision resulting in multiple deaths...

http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=102234

...and yeah I am thinking the name McCain might have misfortune attached to it...but then the 7th Fleet CO himself gets axed by CincPac for, get this "loss of confidence in his ability to command"...

http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=102073

...which demonstrates in severe cases, sh*t can literally roll up hill!

Not sure about the Fitz yet...but some speculation that the McCain could have been hit with a cyber-attack causing its collision...

This and the report that Amazon is controlling DoD info is not helping alleviate my concern the right people are in control of our military...

Yeah...well...if systems are being targeted by hackers...

...what surprises me is the lack of old school seamanship and navigation skills...not so much the enlisted ranks but the officer ranks...there has to be fallbacks for system failures...at least I thought there would be...

That would in my opinion be the damned sailors on would think that with all the eyes on board a ship one of the would say "hey are supposed to be heading for that other boat" ?   Have we become so dependent on a computer screen that the basic human common sense has left our military?

Nobody saw another ship in their path?  This is stupidity at it's best!!

Yes, I made that comment early on...weatherdeck watches are still in practice...but was somebody asleep, in the can...not on station?  When punishments got doled out, nobody was singled out as to "why"...the skippers get the usual "loss of confidence" etc excuse...everything else sealed up.  What was surprising is old school charting going by the wayside...that is on REMF's...it should be taught at Annapolis and continued in the fleet!
