A popular Minneapolis lake named in honor of slavery supporter and former Vice President John Calhoun will get its original American Indian name back, Minnesota officials announced Thursday.

Lake Calhoun will be renamed Bde Maka Ska, the Department of Natural Resources announced. The name, which is pronounced beh-DAY’ mah-KAH’ skah and means White Earth Lake, was used by the Dakota people before federal surveyors renamed it in the early 1800s for Calhoun, who was then secretary of war. Official signs around the lake use both names.

It’s official, at least in Minnesota: Lake Calhoun, the biggest lake in Minneapolis, will now go by its original Dakota name, Bde Maka Ska.

Tom Landwehr, commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources, announced the DNR’s approval of the new name Thursday. Whether or not the U.S. Board of Geographic Names now chooses to keep Lake Calhoun on federal documents, he said, the state will recognize the Indian name for the lake.

The DNR’s decision follows resolutions approving Bde Maka Ska — pronounced beh-DAY mah-KAH skah, meaning White Earth Lake — that were passed by the Hennepin County Board and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

The DNR is the state agency that decides on name changes for geographic features, once the respective county considers a proposed change, gathers public input and votes on it.

This is so ridiculous. Such blatant pandering to minorities by shaming White oppressors. To revert the name to something Injun is what it is. To give it a name that is virtually unpronounceable in the English language and impossible to remember is some hipster's idea of how to really stick it to the man.

"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Same kind of thing was done to Mt. McKinley; Obongo renamed it Denali, "its name in the indigenous Athabascan language", according to CNN.

Quote
... "The Alaska Native people named that mountain over 10,000 years ago," Sullivan said. "Denali, that was the name."
