They seem to change constitutions regularly and have a national referendum, both of which concern me.  Most of all I see no right to gun ownership or carry.

As bad as things are or can be here, we still have more gun rights as citizens than anywhere else on the planet.

Sounds nice.
Happy to hear Putin is well liked. I have no idea how wide spread this anti Russian hysteria is.
I had to look up The School of the Americas.

I can't even remember all the US intervention in Latin America.

Not to worry.  They've got their own "intervention in us" thingy going on now.  "Payback's a mother....."

In,  what is it now,  over 200 countries in the world,  42nd most free is not too shabby.   But it still ain't nothin' to write home about.  (...nor worth leaving home for.  Troc's MMV.)

Our gun ownership tends tokeep the rest of the world a little more free, once they disarm us, there's nothing to stop the Global Elite, AND THIS is the reason I believe the mass shootings here in the USA are MIHOP or LIHOP

That definitely explains the recent shootings where the FBI/LEO were alerted to the perps before it happened.

Forgot about this place!   I was doing a search and the web address came up....so I thought I'd visit again.

Gun ownership:  Uruguay is listed anywhere from number 1 to number 7 when it comes to gun ownership per capita.  We're all armed.

Crime is extremely low.    Food is extremely good.  There is virtually zero litter.  It's difficult to find a homeless person.   There are no pan-handlers.    The closest thing to it is a person who helps you find a parking place in front of a busy restaurant.  It is customary but in no way mandatory to tip such a person 20 pesos (about 70 cents) for helping you pull out into traffic, etc.

Running a business is difficult, small ones are much easier than big ones.   If you have money in the bank, Uruguay is fantastic.  If you think you're going to go down there and start a business....think again.   The exception is if you speak perfect Spanish and English and you want to work in Real Estate.   The other exception is if you buy property in a good tourist zone and rent it out for the Summer.   We hope to emulate our Uruguayan friends who make their living by renting their houses for 2 months a year.   If you're on the beach in Punta, Jose Ignacio, or La Barra/Montoya/Manantialies/El Chorro you can rent a 3 bedroom house out for 30k for January and 15 k for February.

This is enough for many folks to live on for the year because there are no mortgages and property tax is extremely low and "optional."

The pace of life is simply fantastic!  It's the perfect balance between work and leisure.   Very few people work full-time.  The vast majority work 4 months a year.

If you remember what America was like 50 years ago and want to be around optimistic, kind and friendly people, Uruguay is a GREAT country.

We're about 50/50 here and there now.  Soon to be there 10 months a year.

I look forward to doing the ex-pat thing again, in a few years.

I've seen that in both Mexico and  the Philippines.  Never in the richer Asian countries, though.  I think the assumption is that they will guard your car, and make sure nothing happens to it, if ya know what I mean.

I have no idea what their concealed carry laws are!** (see below) I have a little "church gun," a Seecamp 32ACP and I carry it around all the time.   You can go a month without seeing a live cop.  You can live here for 6 months and never hear a cop siren.  (ambulances are different sounding)  I've never seen an arrest take place.  I've never seen or heard of body-armoured cops in a SWAT team.   It's just not something we need or want.

I've never, ever seen anyone open carry except in the 'country' where it's not uncommon for folks to have shotguns on the horse and in the car.

**This is a country very different from the USA!  In the USA, we expect to ask for and get permission from the government before we exercise our rights.  Your question is a case study in what I'm trying to say!

No one asks permission to carry a gun.  We mind our own business.  Period.

It is perfectly legal to drive down the road without a seatbelt, drinking a beer and smoking a joint, while texting and carrying a gun.  You're not breaking any laws.  And even if you were, there's no mechanism in place to catch or punish you.

If you want a large pond/small lake on your property, you don't need to pay for EIR's and get extensive permits from government agencies who will all take their pound of flesh and leave their mark on your project. There's nothing resembling that here.    If we want a pond, we dig a hole!  It's our land!  We own it.

Having said that,  there are "voices" saying guns should be restricted and freedoms should be attenuated pending permission.....these are from the "conservative" party of government, which is another way of saying the "Pro-USA" portion of the government.   These are assholes who want to bring in the drug war, the police state, IMF money and American "advisors" in order that they can enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else.

They are mostly ignored and their policies will never be obeyed by the people.   They have ruined parts of the banking laws and would certainly like to build up a US-style bureaucracy, start taxing, minding folks business, regulating, etc.   I think they're about at the end of their line.

For the most part we simply do not see, feel, hear, taste or smell government in our lives.   Should US-style assholes try to insert themselves too much, people will ignore them or riot in the streets!

The mentality here is quite different.  We all own our property outright and most of the country is small family farms and estancias.   There's no way they'll ever subjugate us like has happened in America.   People have backbones here.

Mentioned you to wifey, medical care?

There is universal health care for everyone....including tourists.   If you have a broken bone, appendicitis,  need stitched, diagnostic imaging or some other type of "urgent" care up then the "free' healthcare is perfect.   Poor folks get all their medical care for free, but people with a bit of money will often visit the "other" side, which is private, mostly cash based medicine.

The private system also features medical insurance....which scares the hell out of me as it's Blue Cross!  But a person who has need for personalized medical care, like for a tricky thyroid disorder, plastic surgery, diagnostic testing in order to evaluate hormonal balance, and things like that will need the private medical system.

As of today, Uruguay cannot be considered a medical tourism destination.   However, I expect this to change as more folks discover it.

I have no fears at all about growing old in Uruguay.   The population is very healthy.   People don't take a bunch of drugs like in America.   Most people are more active in sensible ways, like walking to the produce kiosk every day and stopping by the butcher on the loop home.   Obese people are few and far between and are usually tourists.

We are happily leaving US medicine behind.  We aren't sick and don't visit the doctor anyways.   I suppose if we were looking to be sick, we'd spend a few thousand looking for trouble in US and finding a way to let it dictate our lives.....but we've chosen to live happy, lower stress lives focused on clean air, clean water, fresh, local organic meats and produce and moderate outdoor exercise that has a lovely social component to it....not a treadmill under a popcorn ceiling with earphones in.

Hey, don't knock the tread mill, twice a day in the house keeps the type 2 in check

Funny thing....no one has type II in Uruguay!   Well, I suppose I can't say "no one" except in a rhetorical sense, obviously there are people who have it, but nowhere near the rate it occurs in the US.

Anyone can CURE----yes, I said cure and I mean it----Type II diabetes by fasting for 3 days.  No food intake at all, just water.   4 days for the most stubborn cases.

Then, start eating 14 ounce organic grass-fed rib-eyes for lunch like we do and Asado for dinner at 11:30 PM and you'll slim down and get healthy right quick!

The treadmill is perhaps better than dangerous streets or walking on asphalt for exercise,  but I'd rather take a mile long walk on the beach, cross the street to  get fresh local produce and catch up with neighbors, then a stop by the carneceria and bring it all back home for dinner, over walking on a treadmill and getting in the car.....    Of course, your mileage may vary.

We have to work very hard to lead healthy lifestyles in America compared to Uruguay.  The cheap food there is fresh, local and organic.  The cheap food in the US is fast food and boxed up crap!   High quality meats and produce can be gotten in America for sure.....but you pay a premium.

Anyways,  I've said about all there is to say.   Come on down for a visit and get your head on straight!

Sounds swell.  Being a skeptic though I need a more direct experience to make any final judgment...the looksie you suggest.  Not sure I'll ever get around to it...got my hands full right now with a clan that is about as easy to herd as feral cats.  And just because something is not scrutinized by the PTBs now doesn't mean it wont be tomorrow.  And I see with the dominance of the Broad Front socialists as the clear warning sign of incremental progressive cancer...legalizing abortion, same sex marriage, gays in military, legalized chronic...so if this trend holds it won't be materially better or worse than anywhere else.  Not knocking your choice...just sayin'!

You guys definitely should not come down for a visit.   It's too good to be true.  Best to stay put in America, where things are going great.  ::laughonfloor::

The central government in Uruguay is very, very weak when it comes to direct control of the people.  There is no mass surveillance.  Most things are legal.   The country is small, so the chances of the people getting their way are very good, and there are no "interests" to control around the world via military aggression, sanctions and geopolitical shenanigans.

If the concept of self-government frightens you, stay away!   We don't seem to mind not being looked after, regulated, protected, fined, and caged for every little thing.....in fact, we like it that way.

But, if you're more comfortable with Deep State coups, asking permission for everything and pretending that your votes can "turn things around" by all means stay in America.
