Ermey wasn't going to act in full metal jacket.  He was the technical advisor,  but the producers felt he was the man for the role.   So an accidental actor.

Yup, I don't recall who he was expected to coach but fortunately for him (and us!) they went for the real deal.

Best thing that happened was his being in that movie.

I liked his shows Mail Call and Lock N' Load.

I was sad to hear this on the radio this morning.
