Ermey wasn't going to act in full metal jacket.  He was the technical advisor,  but the producers felt he was the man for the role.   So an accidental actor.

RIP

Bummer. Guy was a true patriot.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Yup, I don't recall who he was expected to coach but fortunately for him (and us!) they went for the real deal.

Best thing that happened was his being in that movie.

I liked his shows Mail Call and Lock N' Load.

I was sad to hear this on the radio this morning.

Yup, enlisted in The Corps at 17, was a DI in SD for about three years and served in Okinawa and Vietnam, left a Staff Sargent after 11 years due to some medical issues...was honorary advanced to Gunny by the Commandant.

Politics was a bit mixed...voted for Obama the first time around then criticized him when he saw how socialist he was...then supported Cruz and Trump because of his concern for 2A rights.

I didn't have that honor in Squid Boot...I had Bad Cop and Worse Cop...Bad could be decent at time but Worse was a real a-hole with zero charm or imagination.

Hey, remember this gem?

Two of my all-time favorite people!

That movie portrayed boot camp better than any other. Our sister platoon didn't have a guy sucking his thumb but had one who marched and went everywhere on all fours. He was the mascot.
