Black boxes in all cars

Feds to require black box event recorders in all new cars

I don't care whether the data can be protected or prove whether someone was in the wrong.  I do care about not allowing the government to infringe on my rights.

Of course, the wrong issue will be debated--already heard it this morning--is it a good thing to be able to find out if as person was speeding during an accident, etc. Can the data be protected. No, no, no.  The first question to answer do the feds even have the authority to compel such action.

It will probably be interlinked with the car's GPS device and a kill switch.

And you can also count on the system's functionality being part of your "annual safety inspection". That's something I expect to see in the pipeline, a federalization or normalization of state vehicle inspections. Some states do not have them, and that must be just intolerable to our progressive overlords.

Sounds as if you drive a GM product...the box is already there.

It's called Onstar.

My 05 Pontiac doesn't have the antennae for it so it's useless.

IRRC it has a 15 second memory chip that contains the status information of every monitor, ie. speed, rpms, speed brakes engaged?
Where ever your vehicle has a sensor that information is recorded.
It helps the mechanic diagnose the problem.

I sure do want to see this happen, but I also know there will be some enterprising electrical engineer that will develop a "jammer" that will prevent any download to the government's database.  I know if that doesn't happen, I will do everything I can to deactivate the thing.

Yup.  Way out of control.  They want mandatory boxes in all vehicles!

http://detnews.com/article/20110526/AUTO01/105260436/1148/U.S.-to-propose-mandatory-vehicle-‘black-boxes’

Screw them!  I will not allow it!
