There wouldn't be a "leftward shift" in this country if a hell of a lot of people didn't want to be taken care of . Politicians of both parties recognize this and cater to it to a greater or lesser extent ... but always just enough to keep the constituent satisfied ( like a junkie , if you will ). That's the most depressing and disappointing part of the whole thing . If 75% of the American people categorically stated that they , under no circumstance , wanted social handouts , there wouldn't be any . Unfortunately , that isn't the case .

I agree we get the government we deserve, but I have to wonder whether all the government freebies is a 'chicken or the egg' question.  Did people want government freebies first, or did certain politicians hand out government freebies creating the need for more government freebies (creating the very junkies you mention)?
