Long Shots
« on: August 24, 2018, 12:09:21 PM »
Read about the Texas fella, then backtracked to get a lay of the land.

Canadian in JTF2 has distance record for sniper kill shot - 3541 meters/3872.485 yards/2.200275 miles June 2017 in Iraq.

In non-lethal distance shooting a Russian team hit 4604 yards/2.615909 miles.

On 9/30/17 retired SEAL Charlie Melton hit 5000 yards/2.840909 miles.

On 1/14/18 Texan Bill Poor hit 5280 yards/3 miles even, bullet traveled 14 seconds.

Hitting anything over a mile is tough, over 2 and you're in a small number of elite shooters...I cannot wrap my mind fully around anything longer.

Charlie Melton is working on a 6000yard/3.409091 mile shot...that's just 720 more yards...but is adding at least 2 more seconds of bullet travel...which doesn't seem much but the math for that added distance given all the variables to factor in makes it a hell of a lot harder.

Glad these American's are on our side!   ::thumbsup::

I talked to a guy who was shooting a bolt action .22 rifle at 400 yds. He was sighting 10' above the target.

These guys aren't playing with little pansie azz calibers. These are REAL guns specially built for distance shooting with very large calibers.

Another thing to remember, less than 50% is the gun. That or more is the shooter. The calculations involved for the shot are almost NASA deep. I read a quote by an Army sniper that said " a sniper is a mathematician that can pull a trigger".

Yeah, good equipment helps, but the math is key...and the slightest error in variable or calculation can wreak havoc.

No dummies in that club.
