Actual names or meddling meant to muck with post-collapse organization of a nations newfound independence?

Either way...has KGB stink all over it.

Better watch your borders...with an imploding EU and a paralyzed US...a swift consolidation of Ukraine will cause the bear's appetite to find more old pastures to plunder.

I always hoped that Russia would release the names of all the US collaborators e.g. in the state dept decades ago.  Some files did get opened up when the USSR fell.

I would love for Putin to say that Joe McCarty was right. IMO he was right.

IMO Russia does not want to take over Ukraine but does not like Ukraine treating the ethnic Russians in the Eastern part badly, as they have.  Ukraine used to use Russian gas and not pay for it and take gas passing through to the EU. Now the Russians are building a second gas pipeline to Germany bypassing Ukraine and the US govt is pissed about that and talking about more sanctions etc. against the pipeline.

Didn't it turn out that an incredible percentage of East Germans were spying on each other?

Yeah, I'm sure Harry Hopkins is at the top of that list.  I have no doubt ComIntern was successful in converting the elitist dem's into outright socialists...so yeah Joe was right.  I further contend that the backbone of the modern DeepState arose from those traitors as well.  The fact that those people are batshyt crazy over everything Trump makes me like Trump more and more...and this is coming from a life-long skeptic.  And I have little problem with ethnic Ukrainians being sh*tty to ethnic Russians if in fact it is happening...they've been treated horribly by every neighbor they have...the wheel turns, ethnic Russians should suck it up or emigrate to Russia.  If not for oil and gas pipelines Ukraine would not be in the news...like anybody they should be free to go their own way without bullying from any neighbor...the pipelines are the ONLY reason Russia is in Ukraine and the ONLY reason they annexed Crimea, despite their drama queen attestations for the well being of ethnic Russians.  The easy test would be for the ethnic Russians to go to Russia...then the one true reason for them not to leave Ukraine alone would be laid bare for all to see.

East Germany was a hive of intrigue throughout the cold war...it was interestingly enough the playground of Col. Putin, that ID pic above I posted is his East German Stasi ID card.

An even more interesting thing...how did a middling KGB Colonel acquire so much influence and arise to such prominence in post-Soviet Russia?

I'm sure he was a really nice guy and did everything above reproach...

At least he wasn't a despicable imperialist capitalist businessman like Trump...

Oh,  McCarthy was right and the records from the former Soviet Union proved it ( there is a Ann Coulter book that covers this I think)
Won't hear about it on the nightly news here however.

Oh, BTW...more on Putin -

Russian President Vladimir Putin was a KGB agent for 15 years before entering politics and assuming the country’s highest office.

After studying law at Leningrad State University, Putin joined the KGB and spied on expatriates in St. Petersburg. In the early 1980s, he move to the KGB’s foreign intelligence division in East Germany, where his job was to identify East Germans — professors, journalists, skilled professionals — who had plausible reasons for traveling to Western Europe and the United States and send them to steal intelligence and technology from Western countries.

Biographies of Putin suggest that his KGB career was relatively mediocre: Even after 15 years of service, Putin rose only to the rank of lieutenant colonel and never stood out. In a rare comment to a journalist about this period in his life, Putin said he hadn’t wanted higher-level positions in the KGB because he did not want to relocate his elderly parents and two young children to Moscow.

Putin returned to Russia at the end of the 1980s and worked as a university assistant for a year, which was really a cover for clandestine work with the KGB. His days as an official KGB agent came to an end when he became an advisor to St. Petersburg’s mayor — another career stint considered lackluster.

In 1998, Putin rather suddenly and inexplicably became the director of the FSB, the domestic successor to the KGB, and then the head of the Russian Security Council. The next year, Boris Yeltsin chose Putin to become the next Russian prime minister. You know the story from here: The former KGB wallflower is now the most powerful man in Russia.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2012/06/18/famous-kgb-spies-where-are-they-now/

Nobody goes from Mayor errand boy to Director of the FSB to top dog in the Kremlin Security Council to PM and President by chance.

I don't think comrade Putin forgot his roots, his penchant for absconding Western technology or his quiet slithery hoarding of secrets (secrets I doubt were confided to him but secrets he likely stole from others) that enabled him to rise rapidly in a Klepto/Oligarch dominated Russia.

Even a mediocre KGB officer had to have a certain awareness of things in his own troubled homeland, the land his countrymen occupied and the gathering doom of a failed horrific experiment and the things done to keep it in power.  And while I doubt he was not privy to all efforts against the West he knew the techniques of subversion and recruitment and snared mediocre fish here and there.  Bigger players got bigger fish.  He obviously found a big player and sucked him dry.  Putin once he became head of the FSB had Litvinenko report to him, when told of the corruption throughout the FSB and that the FSB was cooperating with and protecting organized crime syndicates run by powerful Oligarchs he did nothing.  The "mafia state" of post-Soviet collapse didn't occur in a vacuum.  No wonder he, and others ended up dead.

Anyway, all the literature - Venona, the Mitrokhin archive,  all of it shows intense subversion efforts in the West and especially on the UK and US.  KGB spook Yuri Bezmenov said there were many active long-term subversive efforts directed at the West and that this psychological warfare is the first stage designed to demoralize the society of a targeted nation in 15-20 years and that the subversion of the press if a central aim, the second stage is destabilization and takes place over 2-5 years and is centered on economic, foreign affairs and defense targets.  And then the third stage of crisis is triggered taking up to 6 weeks to cause a violent change in structure and then the final stage of normalization to the new reality of living in a altered state.  Oleg Gordievsky suggests that there are perhaps 40-50 sleeper agents placed in America before the Soviet state fell...how do we know this is not true?  He spilled this in 1984...by his timeline...20 years is 2004, 5 years is 2009 the year Hussein Obama was installed as POTUS.  Just a coincidence?

Look up his quotes from that time, they are chilling given where we are now -

"What it basically means is: to change the perception of reality of every American to such an extent that despite of the abundance of information no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interest of defending themselves, their families, their community, and their country." - Yuri Bezmenov on ideological subversion

"They are programmed to think and react to certain stimuli in a certain pattern [alluding to Pavlov]. You can not change their mind even if you expose them to authentic information. Even if you prove that white is white and black is black, you still can not change the basic perception and the logic of behavior." - Yuri Bezmenov on the demoralized person

"As I mentioned before, exposure to true information does not matter anymore," said Bezmenov. "A person who was demoralized is unable to assess true information. The facts tell nothing to him. Even if I shower him with information, with authentic proof, with documents, with pictures; even if I take him by force to the Soviet Union and show him [a] concentration camp, he will refuse to believe it, until he [receives] a kick in his fan-bottom. When a military boot crashes his balls then he will understand. But not before that. That's the [tragedy] of the situation of demoralization." - Yuri Bezmonov expanding on the state of mind of a demoralized person

"Most of the American politicians, media, and educational system trains another generation of people who think they are living at the peacetime," said the former KGB agent. "False. United States is in a state of war: undeclared, total war against the basic principles and foundations of this system." - Yuri Bezmenov on the fallacy of American's belief in a state of peace

Any of that sound familiar when you look back at things or look around you now?  The thing about that last quote is...the enemy is not from without, they are from within and have been for quite a long time!
