Okay, So No Flying Car Yet But The JetPack Is On The Way

I remember seeing this thing being flown around inside of a warehouse about a year back or so. Now it's outdoors and they are doing more extensive testing including what to do in case of engine failure. The linked article sez that they will be marketing it within 18 months. Price tag? $100,000 so save your pocket change.

It's going to be a tough sell to the wife, though.

In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.

Awesome.

But does that mean the TSA will be at my house before I take off?

I especially liked this line from the article:

Quote
The Jetpack's inventor, Glenn Martin, said on the Web site: "In this test we limited the jetpack to 800 ft/min climb so the chase helicopters could keep up." 8,000 feet now apparently seems very possible.

So this is like a motorcycle for aviation. Really, really fast compared to conventional flight.

Seems to me that they've got a landing procedure issue to solve before this will be considered as any kind of mode of transportation. Looks like a clunky, less adventurous way to go skydiving to me - less altitude, no free-fall, no control over landing... Get that thing to land smoothly, upright, and without a parachute, and you're in business.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Yeah, just a few bugs to work out.  Get that landing deal straightened out and my commuting problems could be a thing of the past.  (I need to land on the roof of our parking ramp...don't need to bounce of cars and spill over the edge!)  Plus, I would like to know the range and if after-market kits are available to juice up the rpm's!
