"Drunk on Books"?

"Lignin, the stuff that prevents all trees from adopting the weeping habit, is a polymer made up of units that are closely related to vanillin. When made into paper and stored for years, it breaks down and smells good. Which is how divine providence has arranged for secondhand bookstores to smell like good quality vanilla absolute, subliminally stoking a hunger for knowledge in all of us."

New smell/old smell, I love them both.  Can't see myself with an electronic reader, but to each his own.

I like books and newspapers.

I have a hard time seeing myself in the "library" with a Kindle

I love old books, second hand books, passing on favorites I read as a kid to my kids.

Can't do that with a eReader.  I can see it usefulness in packing light for vacation but other than that....

I find it difficult to "digest" information as readily with electronic formats. I still prefer an actual, printed book. I think their postulated obsolescence is vastly premature.

eta - I've long thought about something akin to a Kindle, but with actual physical pages that can be flipped just like a real book. With organic LED technology something like that is doable. I still don't think it would totally replace printed books, but I would warm to e-readers significantly.

There's something to be said for the tactile.

I think physical acts are connected to the brain.

Someone who lacks the physicality thinks differently IMHO.

Yep. Weren't all of those things supposed to kill books?

It just wouldn't be the same walking into our library (okay, the living room with lots of bookshelves) and seeing a miniscule, cold, soulless device sitting there. Give me something that fills my hands and has weight to it. A nice hardcover making that noise (I don't know how to describe it w/ an onomatopoeia) when you close the book for the last time...can't replicate that.
Reading the paper in the morning (back when I used to get the Globe, then cancelled, now the WSJ, which I have to cancel also!) is was one of my favorite parts of teh day.

I don't miss newspapers.  I've been encouraging people to cancel them for over a decade.  I like getting my news from the internet from any source I want.

To me, mechanical things represent making life effortless--washing machine, coffee maker, garage door opener -- cold, soulless things.

An electronic book?  Reading a book shouldn't come from a mechanical device.  It shouldn't be lumped into just another thing we use to make life easier.

I'm with you , Libertas . About ten years ago I lost $25,000.00 worth of books in a fire . It damned near broke my heart . As far as the "scent" ... There is , to me anyway , nothing like the smell of a stack of old books in a used book store . It's a mustily pleasant odor which beckons me to rediscover forgotten gems of wisdom .

Yes, and when you walk in from the smells of an inner city s**thole at Lake & Chicago to the smell of stacks and stacks of old sci fi and mystery at Uncle Hugos you achieve what I think they call, nirvana.  But I still like my Kindle.  Just for the freebies is justification enough.

Plus, I'm running out of room for more books!

$25k! Holy Guano Bat Man!  I'm lucky if I got $5k tied up in the stuff I got laying around.  But then again I only keep what I really like, the rest goes into garage sales, to friends & family or gets donated to small town libraries and such.

I read all the time and cannot contemplate a life without books.
