This is an old story, going back to maybe Feb 2021.
The US govt removed acres burned from a govt website prior to 1983. They said they used different methods now. Acres burned in the 1930s were much higher than now. The acres burned then were not as harmful as now because the fuel loads were lower because of the more recent fire suppresion practices and lack of prescribed burns.
