Very rare?  No, infrequent at best...certainly not unheard of...just the magnitude surprised anybody.

And it originally got recorded at 6.5, but USGS downgraded to 5.9 because with a 6.2 off Chile and 6.5 off Nicaragua can't have too many 6's rolling in one day...
