My favorite shows have me usually applauding the writers. Rockford Files Wiseguy The Good Wife.
The Good Wife is well written and not preachy. There are usually no good guys on either side. You do not care about either side. There are three episodes involving the NSA contractors spying on the law firm. In one the NSA passed info obtained illegally to local cops. The firm figures it out through a drug dealer. They represent his legitimate business interests. I.e. he invested his drug money in legitimate businesses.
The drug dealer tells each of 3 lawyers at the firm that they need to be available at a certain different time as he will be taking a delivery or some such. He gets pulled over for a 'broken taillight' at a certain time. The cop opens the trunk and smiles to see a large bag full of white powder. The drug dealer tells him to lift the trunk bottom divider. He does and sees several flattened Bisquick boxes. The drug dealer now knows which attorney ratted him out and who to kill.
It is more complicated than that and they learn that someone is tapping their cell phones. It is the NSA. The show is "Parallel construction, bitches." The illegal spying ends when the ex-husband, corrupt former states attorney for IL calls the head of the senate committee governing the NSA. I think he asks him for the illegal spying to end. Then starts to talk about some corrupt real estate deal involving the senator both knowing it is being recorded by the NSA.
I shouldn't go on and on but the writing is very clever. The characters created are as well.
