South Park has Jumped the Shark
« on: June 17, 2011, 10:45:08 AM »
South Parks aired its mid season finale this week.  I finally know what is wrong with me. (NSFW Content warning)

Maybe that's why I really feel South Park sucks this year. Its not them. Its me. :>)

No,wait.  Its them.

Once upon a time Matt and Trey provided pretty funny insights into the culture - concentrating mostly on Leftist stupidity, but they would take on the rightist stupidity  on occasion as well, and usually there would be a point, a "I learned something today" moment, which is sadly lacking from this season. I had a few classes with Matt Stone in high school. My sister was actually pretty good friends with him. My teotwaki home is actually in South Park. I am predisposed to try and like this show, but this season, I am just disappointed.

Reducing the Tea Party to "people with small wieners" just isn't up to par. I don't require lock-step politics, but I do expect clever.  Especially when there is a lot to shoot at if you want to make the Tea Party a target. Having predominantly elderly at the rallies  and then still demanding no cuts to SS or Medicare comes to mind. Or for a more liberal/biased bent highlight rallying for freedom and then denying Homosexuals a marriage contract. Or take on the libertarian position on abortion - or even just go after all the low hanging Ayn Rand/Atlas Shrugged  jokes one can make ( The Mormon episode was one of the best, because there is a lot to make fun of, without undermining the underlying significance and purpose of the religion...  I am pretty sure I know the actual Mormon family on which this was based too)

Maybe Matt and Trey just care moreabout the musical at the moment, or maybe they have just grown cynical themselves ( after all they are 40 and still making fart jokes for a living)

Anyway, I am just sad to see it go. It was one of those small parts of my week that let me forget the crap. And now its crap too.
