Quakes hit Taiwan
« on: April 03, 2024, 12:25:09 PM »

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 - the strongest earthquake in 25 years to hit the island- followed by a smaller quake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck off Taiwan’s eastern coast Wednesday, according to the US Geological Survey, prompting tsunami warnings in southern Japan.

The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.4, struck at 7:58pm ET (7:58am local time) and had an epicenter located about 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of the city of Hualien and shook buildings in the capital Taipei.

It’s the biggest seismic event by magnitude since 1999, when the so-called 921 quake hit the island and killed more than 2,000 people, Taiwan weather authorities said during a press conference. There have been several aftershocks clustered on the island’s east coast.

The second quake, with a magnitude of 6.5, hit 13 minutes later at 8:11pm ET, and was lcoated at almost the exact same spot as the first one: its epicenter was about 11 kilometers northeast of Hualien City.

I heard TSMC was pretty well set up to mitigate quakes, I guess we'll find out.

trivia
If you want to see a traditional Chinese temple you have to go to Taiwan. According to the ADVChina guys, Mao's monsters destroyed those in mainland China.

I think most Chinatowns have traditional temples.  Richmond, BC has a huge one I drove by.  Singapore has the grandest one I've ever seen.  They let you look through glass at the sold gold inner chamber but won't let you take pics of it.

#2 on this list but I can't imagine #1 would be a nicer place to tour.

That looks familiar to me, I recall roaming around more in that area...from like the park & Raffles to by Pearls Hill to the bay...I recall museums, temples, lots of gardens and well, mostly the awesome food I could find just about everywhere but it was a fresh food market (there are many but I cannot recall a name) in the Chinatown area I fell in love with...just having fresh seafood (prawns the size of young lobsters!) and fried rice with anything in it and stuff I cannot remember what its called...I would just point at something yummy looking/smelling and wave cash, wash it down with a Tiger beer, LOL.  I would have to dig through my old albums and memorabilia to help recall anymore details...but Singapore was one of my favorite stops as a young sailor.  And clean, no crime, some say they are harsh there, I say don't be a dirtbag...and those people probably have never been there.

Man, seeing the poor girl get rocked about was bad...people in cars trying to not get hit by big boulders rolling down hills is nuts!

..in CA wouldn't generate much interest...but there it will...especially since anything 4 & up are pretty rare...
