Maybe in a year or two we can schedule a cruise ship vacation for the forum.

Find me a place with one o' those jet-pack thingys from the other thread, and I'm halfway there!

Maybe we can just schedule a meet-up then on dry land somewhere?

Wouldn't that be something? For some reason, the idea simultaneously thrills me and scares the sh*t outa me.

Why would you be scared Pan won't hurt you. I think. ::thinking::

I think it has to do with actual relationships and friendships being built here, over time, based solely on this kind of interaction. We are who we are, but we are also who we are here, as presented and perceived in text-only. Actually crossing over into face-to-face interaction after "knowing" someone here would add a whole new dynamic - and it would likely be the most important dynamic in determining actual interpersonal compatibility vs online interaction.

I can say for myself that I am pretty much "me" here. I lay it out there. But I can also say that there are many facets of me as a human being interacting with people that cannot possibly be conveyed in text. I would guess that is more or less the same for everybody.

So, the prospect simultaneously intrigues the heck out of me and scares the chit out of me.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

As it ought.  One never knows.  Things went well between John et al. and me et al. -- no surprises that weren't pleasant -- but I can tell you from further experience that isn't always the rule.

Better to deal in the reality, I say, than to protect one's pretty fantasies.  For instance, I WILL bark at anybody that isn't able to deal with not dragging a tablecloth off the table via elbows whether we've "known" each other for half an hour or less.

Female, hell.  The women are just as bad as the men.  One would think y'all were raised in a barn.

And don't drip water on my floor or I WILL kill you.  And put the toilet seat down.  And take your shoes off when you come in the house.  And don't harass the cat.

Otherwise, you're fine.  Mi casa, su casa.

I don't think it was ever called that officially. It was just the name nano entered into the auto-generated ProBoards banner. I believe the url was always nanosecondinvestments.proboards.com.

I joined FreeRepublic after 9/11 (actually, I had been lurking there and reading the news stories but just hadn't signed up to post). After about a year I discovered that they have state~by~state pinglists so I signed onto the Washington state board. Within a couple of months I saw a notice where one of the more prominent WA FReepers was hosting a get-together. I requested an invite and soon enough got a chance to meet about a dozen and a half folks whom I had previously only known through posts.

It was the first (and so far only) time I had ever met any of the people I have corresponded with in cyber-space. The element of being able to put a face and especially put the characteristic 'body-language' to someone's words was fascinating.

I definitely wasn't disappointed.

Cool.  Maybe we should have an annual IAF gathering in a central location somewhere, reserve rooms in a quiet out of the way neck of the woods for a weekend of food, drinks and fellowship?  A mini Bilderburg's if you will.

There you go.  We can beat them at their own game.  Bwahaahaa!
We are so far past and beyond the “long train of abuses and usurpations” that the Colonists and Founders experienced and which necessitated the Revolutionary War that they aren’t even visible in the rear-view mirror.
