1911
« on: July 08, 2011, 11:40:54 AM »
Anybody have a chance to test shoot this?

I'd like a 1911 but I want a basic model with only minimalist modern touches and this seems to fit the bill and it's affordable.

Good deal?

I haven't shot the Ruger, but the 1911 is a solid design pretty much no matter who makes it.
I shot my buddies Kimber 1911 a couple of weekends back - I REALLY liked it. I know the Kimber aint cheap, but how many Pistols are you going to buy?  I am sure this Ruger is a good pistol as well, but at $800 MSRP you are in the same ballpark as what the Kimber's go for.

I heartily concur on the Kimber 1911 (haven't shot a Ruger either), and no, it ain't cheap.

Might want to check out the Taurus. I have a couple Tauri, although no 1911, but really like them.

I don't think you could go wrong w/ any  of those makers.
Pricey maybe, but you know it's gonna' work.

I am hoping it hits my local range as a rental option, they have a pretty good selection overall, and I could then compare a few models and see what I like best.

I have not fired a Ruger 1911 nor had the chance to work on one yet but Ruger is an old name with a good reputation. As stated above the 1911 is an old design that has proven itself millions of times over.  I took a look at the Ruger's web page.  The Ruger SR1911 is a series 70 which it a slightly older design; most new 1911s are series 80 design, the biggest difference is series 80 has the firing pin blocking safty, the series 70 does not.  It's also a link lock system verses a cam lock; both are very good but cam lock I like a little better and it lasts longer in my opinion.
The MSRP seems a little high so suspect certain percentage of the price is having the Ruger name stamped on it.

Thanks Gunsmith.  I haven't fired a 1911 since my squid days and I was starting to get nostalgic, came across an article on the Ruger and it started me thinking.  New introductions can be bumped up in price, but after the intial buzz wears off they can dip a little.  I can be patient, to an extent...not sure our idiots in DC are on the same page, but I keep an eye on them too!
 ;)

Thanks for the info.
