As we become increasingly indebted to other nations, and our ability to repay the debt increasingly comes into question, why would they not believe themselves to have moral standing in telling us how to spend our money? We can proclaim our sovereignty all day long, but from their perspective, we are selling it to them.

True, but they ought to be intelligent enough to know that this relationship, such as it is, is largely symbiotic.  And if they think we'll just stop making guns and cede authority around the globe to them then they may have a drug problem!
