Pvt. Nasser Jason Abdo, an AWOL soldier from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was arrested by the Killeen Police Department near Fort Hood and remains in custody there. Authorities, however, will not say if Abdo is the one who raised security concerns.

Abdo went AWOL on July 4. On the eve of his first deployment to Afghanistan -- after only one year in the Army -- Abdo applied for conscientious objector status. It was denied by his superiors at Ft. Campbell but later overturned by the Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Army review board.

I was aware of this guy; his story made the news earlier in the month.  About the rest, we'll have to wait and see as John wrote.

However ...

.... these people are joining the military knowing damn well what's expected of them, so I don't know the motivation/agenda behind giving them any "status" other than prisoner at Leavenworth.

The story at the link has been updated. It now contains this:

Abdo, 21, was found with weapons, explosives and jihadist materials at the time of his arrest, a senior Army source confirms to Fox News. He was arrested at around 2 p.m. Wednesday after someone called authorities to report a suspicious individual.

Eric Vasys, a spokesman with the FBI's San Antonio Office, said authorities found firearms and bomb making components inside Abdo's motel room. Sources also say Abdo was attempting to make a purchase at Guns Galore in Killeen, the same ammunition store where Maj. Nidal Hasan purchased weapons that were allegedly used to gun down 13 people and wound 30 others at the base on Nov. 5, 2009.

Sources said Abdo had enough materials to make two bombs, including 18 pounds of sugar and six pounds of smokeless gunpowder -- a possible trigger for an explosive. A pressure cooker was also found. Another counterterrorism source said the bomb making materials and methodology came "straight out of Inspire (a terrorist magazine) and an Al Qaeda explosives course manual."

There are a few more details at the link such as his target being a restaurant frequented by Army personnel but that's most of it.

The Tatler has obtained a preliminary law enforcement report written late Wednesday regarding the arrest of Army Pfc Nasser Abdo in connection with a plot to attack Fort Hood, Texas. It’s eye-popping. According to the report, Abdo was arrested with ammunition, weapons and a bomb inside a backpack. He has confessed to plotting an attack on Ft. Hood.

The report states that the Killeen Police Department received a tip from a local gun store owner about a “suspicious male” who asked about smokeless gun powder and then bought three boxes of 12 gauge shotgun ammunition, smokeless gun powder and a magazine for a Springfield 9mm. He paid in cash and left in a taxicab.

KPD learned that the cab picked Abdo up at a local low-cost motel and that he had also paid cash for an Army uniform and Ft. Hood unit patches at a local military surplus store. The gun store, Guns Galore, is the same one at which Maj. Nidal Hasan bought the weapon he used in the 2009 terrorist attack on Ft. Hood.

KPD arrested Abdo soon after learning about his movements and purchases. Fox reports that he had enough material to make two bombs. Abdo had gone AWOL from Ft. Campbell, KY on July 4 and was being investigated for child pornography that was found on his government-issued computer.

This looks like a case of good police detective work acting to stop an attack in motion. Two others are in custody as well, and KPD is said to be assessing their connections to Abdo.

Local authorities will hold a press conference on the plot later today.

Update: KPD is giving their press conference now and confirmed many of the details in the report.

Here's the deal: I never enlisted in any branch of the Service. I had my chance, but I didn't know then what I know now. However, that does not lessen the support, respect, and prayers I have for those who have served, are serving, or are pursuing the service.

To go out daily and fight, in whatever form or fashion, for what America has and wants to have, going overseas, and fighting an enemy that seems to grow exponentially on a daily basis, I can't imagine brushing shoulders with terror like this. To even think of looking this guy in the eye, believing he was fighting for America and against the mindset of tearing us down, only to hear that he was planning another attack on the base. It's nothing short of filth and disgust on his part. I'll just stop there...
