The House has passed two bills related to the debt ceiling. The Senate has yet to submit a counter proposal in writing. All of their proposals, including the President's have been verbal, which even the CBO says they can't score.  Why then does the House continue to try to scramble to put together legislation that doesn't have a chance of passing in the Senate?  The Democrats are making the Republicans look like idiots by saying, "Jump!" and the House Republicans keep responding by saying "How high?"

Speaker Boehner: please stop trying to draft any further legislation.  Change two words in the Cut Cap and Balance bill and re-send it to the Senate.  Then dismiss the House members and tell them that you'll call them back when the Senate has submitted a response for consideration.  Period.  And make sure that every single Republican emphasizes that they have done their job and the Senate Democrats have not.  They still haven't put anything in writing!  Shout that from the rooftops! Stop playing nice and start saying it like it is.

    The late-night jousting in the Senate followed a vote on House Speaker John A. Boehner’s debt-limit measure, which would extend the Treasury’s borrowing power until early next year and force another economy-rattling fistfight within a few months.

    Drafted largely by aides to Reid and McConnell last weekend, the measure was originally designed to appeal to the more centrist Senate.

Everything we’ve gone through this week was elaborate theater to get us ultimately to an even worse conclusion. At least 22 Republicans didn’t fall for it.

Dems have around 20 seats up for re-election soon, so reid isn't gonna force them into a vote that will get them grilled back home. Reid is political posturing only. So is obama. The first indication of a deal was when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) abruptly delayed a late-Saturday night test vote on his plan lifting the federal debt ceiling until 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, and said the move was made at the request of the White House.

Then around 11pm Jonathan Karl of ABC and Major Garrett of National Journal (formerly of Fox) have both announced a deal to end the debt ceiling stand off. Both reporters are describing a similar deal, which is very close to the Boehner plan but it has an automatic trigger in place to secure the "second half" of the debt ceiling increase, so no new negotiations will be necessary in December.


The deal begins with a short term increase of the debt ceiling, just a few days worth so the deal can be put in legislative language and passed.

I think Lee is a good guy from what little I've seen and I wish him the best. Hope he doesn't cave.

This whole thing is absurd. Stuart Varney, whom I think very highly of, said what R-man said re: borrowing/spending less...but still going in the hole by 50% from where we are now!!! How the f**k does that solve our problem?
I told my kids today that the average debt owed by each of us is somewhere around $45k and my 9y.o. boy, who can't really grasp the amount, looked stunned and said, "But what did I do to get stuck with that?"
