I think this kind of low-hanging fruit is going to increasingly be removed from the tree. There is no money for "feel-good" programs that cost $75M.

30,000 college students kicked out of food aid program in Michigan
State's new eligibility rules to save $75M; more students got aid than thought

...Federal rules don't allow most college students to collect food stamps, but Michigan had created its own rules that made nearly all students eligible, said Brian Rooney, Corrigan's deputy director. As a result, the number of Michigan college students on this form of welfare made the state a national leader. For example, Michigan had 10 times the number of students on food stamps as either Illinois or California, Rooney said.

Cutting off the students is part of what Corrigan says is an effort to change the culture of the state's welfare department and slash tens of millions of dollars of waste, fraud and abuse...

"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

The moron in the Judge Judy clip comes to mind - 3rd year student for "music", English barely comprehensible - too busy "being me"; receiving tuition and rent assistance.  I know he's not representative of all college students, but the tax money spent on him is a total waste.

I read the article; one student was sharing her "assistance" with her father.  Looks like more will now have to have their parents sharing their "assistance" with their offspring.

YMMV, but I see this development as a good thing, actually.  As each of these programs are discontinued, people will either get off their asses and help themselves or not; either way it's an end to the endless handouts.

Well, now, that's the rub, isn't it.  It's Michigan; there are no jobs.

Hungry? Why not try one of Detroit's new urban farms?

Gotta love these leftist utopias.

In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.

They should move to Canada, their socialist utopia.
These people voted this for this crap and approve therefore, well, they could move to Washington or something, I certainly don't want them diluting this state's culture.

They can rot for all I care, I'm just sorry my friends in Minnesota are forced to live next to them.  At least those Michiganers are farmers.

When I lived on-campus in my freshman and sophomore years, we were required to purchase a meal plan as part of our housing bill, and the cheapest one was about a grand per semester. Imagine that, paying your own way. Little did I know there was even such a thing as "academic food stamps".
