FCC Kills Off "Fairness Doctrine"
« on: August 23, 2011, 01:03:04 AM »
But why? What's their motivation?

LINK

Quote
The Fairness Doctrine and 83 other "outdated and obsolete media-related rules" were tossed Monday into the regulatory dust bin of the Federal Communications Commission, in a move that the agency said helps it achieve the FCC's "reform agenda."

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said that the decision to eliminate the Fairness Doctrine was part of a larger mandate proposed by the Obama administration to ease regulatory burdens by getting rid of duplicative or outdated measures. Genachowski informed Congress in June of the pending action.

If the O'Bama admin has any kind of a mandate to ease any kind of regulatory burden then I am unaware of it. These people love to regulate. My suspicion is that if they are getting rid of the "Fairness Doctrine" it can only be because they have something even worse in store for us.

I agree. I suspect this is in preparation for a forthcoming push for some sort of omnibus "Public Airwave Modernization" regulatory framework. What's the left hand doing?

Or the gripping hand.  That's the one needs watching.

The hand you cannot see...

Destroyers never remove something unless they have a pretty good idea of what they'll replace it with.  It will be touted as a common sense measure aimed at streamlining oversight and ensuring public trust in the nations dissemination of information.  Plus Rush is on vacation and something (often something aimed squarely at him) always happens when he is away!  Strike three.

Get ready for it...

I'm confused. I thought the fairness doctrine was already gotten rid of.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

That would be, "on the third hand."

The "gripping hand" has a rather specific origin. Using it usually implies a familiarity with that source.

The "Fairness Doctrine" has been un-enforced for at least two decades or so which has allowed the emergence of, among other things, conservative talk radio as a successful business model. AM radio was all but dead prior to the FCC's decision to ignore the "Fairness Doctrine."

Quote
The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was, in the Commission's view, honest, equitable and balanced. The FCC decided to eliminate the policy in 1987, and in 2011 the Fairness Doctrine was effectively eliminated.

This gives MSNBC , NBC , CBS , ABC and PBS a free hand during the upcoming election to do their usual whitewash of Stymie's administration without worrying over presenting a dissenting point of view .

Did they ever worry about that?
