Pentagon Warns China's Military Is Growing Rapidly

WASHINGTON – Bolstered by the development of a new stealth fighter, an aircraft carrier and a record number of space launches over the past year, China is on pace to achieve its goal of building a modern, regionally focused military by 2020, according to the Pentagon.

In a report released Wednesday, the Pentagon said Beijing has closed critical technological gaps and is rapidly modernizing its military equipment, all with an eye toward preventing possible U.S. and allied intervention in a conflict with Taiwan. It also warns that the military expansion could increasingly stretch to the western Pacific in a move to deny U.S. and allies' access or movement there.

"The pace and scope of China's sustained military investments have allowed China to pursue capabilities that we believe are potentially destabilizing to regional military balances, increase the risk of misunderstanding and miscalculation and may contribute to regional tensions and anxieties," said Michael Schiffer, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia.

The report comes as the U.S. and Beijing struggle to restore their strained and volatile relations amid ongoing concerns about the largely unexplained military build-up, America's continuing support for Taiwan and persistent fractures over what are believed to be China-based cyber intrusions into American government and defense-related networks.

China froze military contacts with the U.S. last year to protest an arms sale to Taiwan worth more than $6 b nations in the region.

Republican House Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said Beijing's "increasing assertiveness," including its effort to deny access to the western Pacific is a growing concern and "has significant consequences for the security and stability of the region."

And he warned that security in the Pacific could be jeopardized if allies believe that the U.S. will scale back its military presence in the region in order to cut defense spending.

China's cyber activities have also been an increasing point of tension.

In 2010, the report said, a number of computer systems, including U.S. networks, were the target of intrusions that appeared to originate in China. The breaches were aimed at stealing data, but they exhibit the same skills needed for more destructive network attacks.

The Pentagon estimates that China spent more than $160 billion for its military in 2010. U.S. defense spending for that year was about $550 billion, not including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Defense officials have repeatedly called for China to be more transparent about its intentions surrounding the military build-up, but the report also notes that Beijing continues to profess that the growth is peaceful

I've been harping on the Chinese threat for quite a while...and for the second time today already!

They have yet to experience the full slate of failures necessary to turn a carrier concept into practical reality...but labor is cheap for them, so as long as the machines are made to keep working labor losses are of no consequence to them.  Same with the stealth, I don't think they're as close to us as they would like us to think.  But they are going to get there eventually, they are good at stealing and our libtards are good at giving.  They have extensive basing rights already throughout the region and are beefing up their submarine forces and air forces.  Now is a good time to pullback from Europe and since Duh Wun is not interested in defeating Jihadi scum we can get out of Afghanistan, Iraq & Libya and concentrate on our biggest battleground - the Pacific.

All of this is a direct consequence of Clinton giving them the keys to the liquor cabinet, so to speak. He gave them a generational leg-up on missile and guidance technology, and their nascent stealth program probably has a similar origin.

This also immediately demands serious consideration of how our staggering national debt, much of it owed to them, is very much a threat to national security. Who is to say they aren't able to demand something like unfettered access to the US patent archive as part of their "payment"? Deliberately placing the country into a state of indebtedness to other powers like this, well to paraphrase Rick Perry, "it's almost treason".

One of their goals is to control the oil supply routes from the Suez to Japan and all parts in between.
They are also determined to repatriate Taiwan.  President Bush, probably listening to Condi Rice, did
not sell Taiwan all they needed to defend itself.  Obama has cut that at the knees.  When their technical
skills rise to the level of their negotiating skills, Katy, bar the door.

India will be a wrench in their gearworks.

India will be a wrench in their gearworks.  I hope you are right!  But if this is our hope, shouldn't we (America) be working toward that end?  I know not under SCoaMF, but Bush made some progress with India and a new POTUS could move in that direction and that would be a smart move!  That and Taiwan!

China has been waiting at least 1,000 years for there moment in the Sun. They have been the welcome mat for just about every known Country in the World. This calls to mind one of Mark Steyn's favorite little factoids to throw out, that we are on track to cover the entire budget for the PLA. I think it's by 2020-something, our interest payments on the debt they hold will exceed their military expenditures, so in essence we will be funding their rapid military expansion.

I read a quote several years ago by a Chinese general, essentially saying that China would win a nuclear war with the United States by attrition, city for city.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Hmm, basic outline looks familiar, dem's letting Chi-Com's into the patent office again?

Still, can it fly and do other stuff?

I wonder how many "takes" had to happen to get one recovery and one launch done?   ::saywhat::

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/see-chinas-first-successful-fighter-jet-landing-on-an-aircraft-carrier/

I see many interesting things here in this video -

1) Looks like Pu pants caught the last wire, and if he had missed that, he had very little room to get airborn again before plowing into the sea.

2) That's a big plane for a smallish carrier, not going to be carry much of those.

3) I wonder how close to stall speed that thing came to as it popped off the ski jump?

4) We know nothing of the real capability of this aircraft in terms of practical performance, manuevability, defensive or offensive capability.

I think the ChiCom's has a nice PR op but they are a several years removed from putting out a credible navy air component of modest strength.

Keep spending the Yuan's though.  Oh, and you got at least a 3-4 more years to rob our patent office, maybe less, better get crackin'!

OK, here we go...

So, they got 5 "stealth-like" fighters now...

While the J-20 looks like the American F-22 when viewed head on, it's overall shape, weight, and engine power is closer to the American F-15C.  Worse, for the J-20, is the fact that its engine power is about the same as the F-15C, while the F-22 has 65 percent more power. With the afterburner turned on, the J-20 has more power than the F-15C and nearly as much as the F-22. But because the afterburner consumes so much fuel you can't use more than a few minutes at a time. The new J-20 model appears to be able to supercruise, joining the F-22, Eurofighter, and the Gripen as aircraft that can supercruise (go faster than the speed of sound without using the afterburner).  The J-20 has some stealthiness when it's coming at you head on.  But from any other aspect, the J-20 will light up the radar screen.

http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htairfo/articles/20150217.aspx

Still a ways off from fully functional and superior to even "non-stealth" top-end fighters.  I doubt they'd expose one to any risk so let them burn the renminbi!
