Oleg Atbashian's talk at Tea Party meeting
« on: February 28, 2011, 08:14:18 PM »
Oleg is better known as "Comrade Red Square" of The People's Cube.  I found out that he would be speaking and doing a book signing about an hour away from me back on Feb. 4, and went to see him.

I was going to link that site for a comment at the Market Ticker when I discovered that a video of that evening is available.  It's an hour long, but well worth your time.

(I can't get the embed to work, so click on "that evening" link and watch it there.)
We are so far past and beyond the “long train of abuses and usurpations” that the Colonists and Founders experienced and which necessitated the Revolutionary War that they aren’t even visible in the rear-view mirror.

He's got a ton of knowledge...when he speaks of socialism...people should listen, and listen very carefully.
We are now where The Founders were when they faced despotism.

I watched this hour long video in its entirety last night, originally planning only to watch it in chunks. I just had to keep listening and hear the rest.

Oleg runs the hilarious satire site www.thepeoplescube.com. Prior to immigrating to the US in 1994, he had worked as an agitprop artist in the USSR. In this video he describes many of the parallels he sees between the old Soviet system he lived under, and the would-be Soviets here who call themselves progressives.

In particular he makes an interesting argument that I had not really thought of before, but now it seems self-evident. He talks of the trendy demands for things like "right to health care", "right to a job", "right to housing", and notes that the Soviet constitution contained all those things. He argues that when the government is compelled to provide you a material right such as these, it is likewise compelled to dictate your existence to you so that it can provide those "rights". For example, the "right to housing" becomes -- in reality -- the government telling you where you will live. The "right to a job" becomes -- in reality -- the government telling you where you will work.

If you have a bit of time, this is quite interesting:

How did you get the embed to work?  When I tried it, the video appeared in my post but it wouldn't play.  The same thing happened when I tried it at the Market Ticker.

I don't know, was your version hosted on YouTube or one of those other sites like Vimeo? I found the YouTube version at The People's Cube and just embedded the YouTube link here between the flash tags. Then I saw you had already made a thread about this.

It's a very interesting video. He's a very witty guy, which you can see in his website too.

I've linked other videos before, but for some reason I couldn't get this one to work.  Oh, well.

I haven't commented much at The People's Cube, because I'm not that witty.  Many of the regulars comment "in character" as Communists in the USSR and are often very funny.

Everybody ought to watch this.  I drove an hour each way to see him, and all you have to do is crack open a cold one and click "play".

At least I got to meet him.  I bought his book and he signed it.  I also brought along my deck of cards (which I had bought earlier) and got him to sign that, too.

Just the whole "hook" of his site, the idea of a Rubik's cube being redesigned for egalitarianism is itself genius. Look comrade, all the squares are red. The same for all!

How do you like the book? I ordered a copy last night after watching the video.
