Why not?  So-called legal tender of the paper variety will be little better than buttwipe soon enough!

One thing specifically state in the constitution is our monetary standard.

This will never happen.

Quote
The Utah House was to vote as early as Thursday on legislation that would recognize gold and silver coins issued by the federal government as legal currency in the state. The coins would not replace the current paper currency but would be used and accepted voluntarily as an alternative.

OK, not a replacement.  Just stipulating that bullion coins be accepted as legal tender.  Which is kind of dumb, as that $50 gold piece of worth over $1,400.

Which gets me to thinking...they already are.  Nobody spends them as I stipulated above...

So what's the point?   ::thinking::

It is largely symbolic, another flare in the night that Obamakov & Co are destroying the value of paper currency with their forced march toward the abyss of socialism.  When TSHTF people will be forced into a barter economy anyway, laws and legal tender will be what people say it is.

They are doing this to avoid the  necessity of bartering.
Bartering will lead to many disagreements and misunderstandings, possible civil disruptions and violence.  If or when the dollar fails, Utah and other states that have a coinage system in place, all business within the state to continue intact.

But silver would have to take precedence, gold being so high now, breaking an ounce of silver when buying a loaf of bread is one thing, busting an ounce, or even a half-ounce of gold...  ::doh::

Gold or silver, or nickle backed by Gold in the state vault.
That would stop funny business with the coins.

True, there is a lot states could do to fill the void, question is I wager precious few are considering the options, and now's the time to do it, so chaos will be the general order the day for most.
