I'm not sure why we need it anyway. Hell, if Lindsay Lohan breaks a nail its tweeted, facebooked, texted, my spaced, e mailed and a few other social outlets I'm not aware.

If something bad actually occured, don't you think we would know? Quickly???

I believe we DON'T need it; there have been no issues with a failure by radio or TV to quickly disseminate matters of national import to date.  This system will be used to tell us only what "they" want us to know, and there do exist all the alternative communication avenues you mention as well.

If my gov't gets on and tells me to be calm, it's under control.....i'm heading for the hills. It will be time to lock and load.

Something like this is no longer needed (as has already been pointed out for the same reasons already noted). The only legitimate reason for this at this point in time is to enable the government to commandeer mass media outlets and quell dissent in preparation for a dictatorship taking over.
