There are approximately 25-30 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year.

This fee is on trees from anyone who sells over 500 fresh trees which is going to be the majority of sellers of trees I'm guessing.

25 million times 15 cents is $3,750,000

That's a lot of promotion.

Sounds like another effort at full employment for Obama cronies.  And how long before it's $1 per tree or $2 or...?

While the amount "raised" is small right now I believe it really represents an effort to take money from us in small incremental ways. How many more of these committees and programs will we be funding?  I believe the potential is there for hundreds if not thousands.  Look at Great Britian--they have boards and agencies for everything!

He also imparted that this tax was rent-seeking from yet one more industry that demands govt. subsidy; apparently the Christmas Tree Growers Assoc., taking note of the growers taking a beating from the competition with artificial trees, sought Unca Sugar's "help".

If I didn't so enjoy a live tree, I'd tell them to suck it.

But...but...but... I thought the liberals DIDN'T want people to cut down more trees. It hurts Mother Gaia, and makes hippies cry.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Liberals hate the artificial ones as well ...  It goes something like this:  paper/plastic; paper/plastic; what to do, what to do.....   ::thinking::

Can't accuse libs of being consistent.

According to the site I linked to above:
" Real Trees outsell fake trees by an almost 3 to 1 margin."

Doesn't sound like they need any help getting people to buy.

I'm guessing there are some regional differences in sales statistics...I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the liberal enclaves sell fewer live tree because of the eco-nut gene, which is ironic as it means if any Christmas trees are sold there they would be forced to buy the evil corporate polluter manufactured tree.  I'm betting many leftnuts do without because they are so torn in loyalty!

Lots of good information at that link, LV, including the fact that these mofos are the admitted rent-seekers

A little bit more information on the topic from a comment found here:

This tax was proposed under the aegis of the Commodity Promotion, Research and Information Act of 1996.

'Zack right, NEWT.  Because commodities need government's protection and promotion.

Close! I think because the lobby and donate to campaigns. The .15 cents per tree is smoke so we don't see what the government is really kicking in in tax payer dollars. The .15 cents is probably the kickback.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/11/obama-administration-to-delay-new-15-cent-christmas-tree-fee/

Quote
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is going to delay implementation and revisit a proposed new 15 cent fee on fresh-cut Christmas trees,  sources tell ABC News. The fee, requested by the National Christmas Tree Association in 2009, was first announced in the Federal Registry yesterday and has generated criticism of President Obama from conservative media outlets.

Oh bullsht!  Delay until when?  January?  So then it will have been in effect for eleven months before it takes effect December after next and the "industry that is taxing itself" -- swear to God, that's the way the "checkoff" was described in BMG's link -- will have plausible deniability, i.e. "this is not a new .... "checkoff".

Checkoff?  Sounds like jag-off to me.

List growing ever longer.
