Newt still looks like the smartest guy on the stage. Maybe I can forget about his serial divorces/marriages and total squish positions on global warming and healthcare. Maybe.

I would also like to forget about Bachmann making sh*t up on the fly just because it sounds good. Because except for that (the Gardasil = retard moment only being the most recent and egregious) she sounds pretty good.

The part of the debate I watched (second half) had Cain doing the folksy aw-shucks stuff that has him up in the polls.

Romney and Huntsman. In a word: Ugh.

Santorum: The few times that I heard him he spent most of his time talking about what he had done as a senator. One answer had me losing count of the number of times he used the word, "I." Maybe someone should tell him that no one cares about his history so much as what he will do if elected. Curious technique: Answer every question with a resume briefing. Bachmann does that too from time to time...reminds us all that she is a tax attorney...big deal. It's irritating. Am I wrong to want to know what a candidate's plan is rather than their work history? No. I don't think so.

Paul sounds almost sane when he isn't talking about foreign policy or legalizing drugs and prostitution and other nutty sh*t like that. Almost.

There are two reasons.  The first is that Perry, for all his success as governor of Texas, appears not to have thought long and hard about why he wants to be president and what he would do if he achieved his goal.  It's the kind of intense thinking that goes on long before a campaign actually starts; once the candidate is on the trail, it's too late for soul-searching, self-evaluation, and in-depth study. It's hard for a candidate to have a firm grounding in issues and policy if he has not first done that kind of thinking.

This is a wonderful plaid pants answer and I'm sure
they'll have out to the Country Club for a round.

The second reason is that since Perry made the decision to run for president -- jumping in at the late date of August 13 -- he has not done much of the kind of day-in, day-out, speaking-six-times-a-day campaigning that gives candidates the ability to repeat their positions extemporaneously, backward and forward, and sometimes in their sleep.

This answer hits the nail on the head.
