Heh.

Yeah, well, we got idiots here in Minnie too...first snowfall, 12th snowfall, it never fails...I see idiots going like bats out of hell on slippery side streets and slowing to a crawl on plowed highways...totally backasswards...

And yeah, I'm one of those bastards in an SUV...I'm the guy going by you waving and laughing as I try to comprehend just what kind of stupid moves you just did to get buried that deep into the ditch!

No matter what vehicle I drove in NJ, I was fine when it snowed because I knew a few things about driving in the snow -- what to do/what not to do -- and the one thing that pissed me off was the idiots who first stopped at the bottom of the hill, and then expected to get up and over.

I knew you Minnie-ers would appreciate the vid, Libertas.

We have the same sort of loons down here in NC, like the kid who, thankfully, put himself in a ditch rather than wipe us out coming the other way, because he was driving too fast on an unplowed road, in a pickup with bad tires and no weight in the bed.  Then he gets out of said truck and ....

... wait for it ........

...... he's wearing plastic bags on the outsides of his shoes.

Oh my.  You really can't fix it...stupid seems terminal!

There are many other dumb things people do...brake in icy curves...try to gain traction on icy pavement (they think black means road...here black often means "black ice") instead of going on the snowier parts where you can at least gain traction...inflating tires to max (screw the government and their conservation BS, lower tire pressure means more tire surface on the road!)...not being able to think ahead (your hill reference is a prime example, circle around, it's easier to go slowly down a hill than up it!)...crowding snow plows that can chew you up and spit you out...and there is no excuse for not having a winter-ready vehicle (reliable, good tire & battery, washer fluid, emergency kit {including kitty litter} and a good spare)!

People who fail to respect winter hopefully only end up hurting just themselves!

That's it exactly about the hill.  You can't expect to get up from stop on an icy/snowy road; you need a bit of a running start and -- and same with on/off ramps -- you need to drive on the side in the untraveled snow for better traction.  Never failed me.

I'll tell you what, though; in 1981 I bought my first new car, an '80 leftover Escort.  It was front-wheel drive and I despised that about it.  There was, previously, never a question for me as to what to do in a skid, it just came naturally.  With a front-wheel drive, one needs to steer the car in the direction you want it to go and kiss the gas a bit; totally counter-intuitive.

The exhilaration of first snow as kids because we could play in it gave way to the exhilaration of first snow as teen because we cold make money off of it. We would go around and yank cars out of ditches and snowbanks for $20 a pop. Every so often we would get the same gut twice in the same night.

Yeah, those of us old enough to remember the predominance of rear wheel drive vehicles were amazed at how fishtailing could only be achieved in front wheel drive autos...by going in reverse!

Didn't do that, but years ago I did help out my BIL with plowing to pick up extra cash.  Ahh yes, long lonely nights of endless snow whilst I fueled myself on tobacco and caffeine and laughing at the latest Art Bell show while I wind-rowed parking lots, agonized in the torture chambers that are mini-storages and apartments...my yellow strobe light flicking away as I have left hand on the wheel, right hand on the joystick and foot on the gas...

Ahh yes, the treasured memories of winters past...
