House passed CR w/60 B in cuts
« on: February 20, 2011, 05:19:34 PM »
Quote
It took an all-nighter to finish a marathon debate over the remainder of FY2011 spending, but the House finally passed a continuing resolution as dawn approached this morning.  The new budget reduces spending $60 billion over earlier projections, which falls short of the $100 billion conservatives had hoped to see.  The lower figure may put more pressure on the Senate to pass it quickly:

I wondered from the start if that hat-tip to the Freshmen and their $100 Billion demand wasn't a feint to put the Dems in the position of looking extreme if they try to balk at the lesser cuts.

I wondered that because the "old dogs" started off at that $32 Billion number that they knew would throw everyone into a tizzy. Then they let the Freshmen "win" and agreed to the $100 Bil in principle. Plus, no matter what substantial figure they came up with to cut, they knew the Dems would wail and gnash their teeth, and they knew that at the end of the day, they can't pass any cuts into actual law that the Senate won't agree to. Their only shot at getting substantial spending cuts was to do something to force the Senate's hand, thus putting the pressure on the Chimpanzee to sign the law.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

I'm sorry, did they say they cut Sixty billion from a Three and a half trillion dollar budget?
I'm supposed to be proud of them?

Mark Levin was discussing this Friday. He was mad because there was an additional 20+ billion slated to be cut, but it was voted down by the House. 90 Republicans voted against it, including 2 of the top Republicans (Cantor and McCarthy). Some of the reasons given were that it was "too extreme". Levin was beside himself: "Too extreme? Too extreme?! In a 3.6 TRILLION dollar budget?!"

This is on current year budget, not next year.  And if these clowns have kittens over such small cuts, it really tells you how seriously addicted to spending the Ruling Class truly is.  Screw the scalpel, start swinging the meat axe and start severing meat and bone!  They're gonna bitch anyway, get to it!

The Republicans' objection, as I understand it, was that these cuts were left to the administration's discretion.  I'm not sure I'd want them directing the cuts either; three guesses where they'd pick, first two don't count.

Eliminating the Office of Salazar would save a chunk of change and on the flip side generate a lot of business by simply not being there.
