With a few days left in December, the FBI reports the number of background checks has already topped the previous one-month record -- set only in November -- of 1,534,414 inquiries by gun dealers to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System also known as NICS. Almost half a million checks were done in just the last six days before Christmas....

A leading gun-control organization says repeat buyers most likely are responsible for the holiday surge in guns sales. "The research we've seen indicates fewer and fewer people are owning more and more guns," said Caroline Brewer of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "All the trends indicate the number of Americans who own guns has declined." "It would appear because of fear-mongering by the NRA since (President Barack) Obama's election that people are adding more guns to their arsenals out of fear Obama and the Democrats will take away their guns, which is absurd," said Brewer.

Yeah,  its fear mongering to think anyone might take our guns - when Ms. Brewers FULL TIME JOB is to lobby congress to take our guns, restrict our use, and regulating our ammo, and Democrats like Obama, Pelosi and Reid are all publically onboard with such a plan. . oh but to be fearful of them actually succeeding?  Oh that is irrational "fear mongering"

Oh, and maybe Ms. Brewer would bother to look at data newer than say 1994 - like the most recent gallup polling  showing a 6% uptick in those willing to self-report they have firearms, and that number is most likely less than the true number who do own firearms.  I didn't own a gun till two years ago, and a look at the NICS Data makes it obvious  that our "Arsenals"  (not gun collections) are growing - and at such a rate that couldn't all be accounted for by "repeat buyers" -  Using the number for December in the article, that is  16 Million just this year, added to 28.5 Million in 2009 and 2010 - both up 2 million over previous levels. Assuming an average of one Gun sold for NICS check , thats  44 Million weapons sold by Obama, gun salesman of the year 3 years running. Enough to arm 40% of the adult male population of the United States - and that doesn't count the other firearms that were already out there.  But nothing is going on. Others are not worreid about the liberal disaster going on all aorund them.  There is nothing to see here. Move along.

At least three first-time gun-buyers in Gunsmith's shop went to him for advice, which he gave, and they followed through.  One is a Black woman Obama-voter, so, yes, Virginia, "they" are arming up as well, which I have already averred, followed by pooh-poohing.  (Yes, I'm lookin' atchoo, Libertas    )

As for repeat gun-buying, yes, that's happening as well.  Our good friend indulges his obsession of acquiring more and more guns by contending he'll have a handgun and a rifle for every member of his "tribe" when TSHTF.

That Gallup poll shows that as well - a big rise in self identified Dems owning guns. I have a friend who thinks the liberal tendency to be fearful of firearms will prevent them from using them SHTF.  I think they will get over it right quick when they realize thier life long dreams of bullying others can be realized when they pick one up

Its every purchase, and handguns are checked separately from long guns - so if you were to try and buy an AR-15 and a pistol on the same day and at the same shop, they would run 2 checks on you .  However,  you may buy multiple pistols or longguns on each check .
1-2% of NICS checks are rejected (felons, etc)  so in all likelyhood the number of NICS checks actually underestimates the number of firearms actually sold.

In 20 states, NC being one, if one holds a Concealed Carry Weapons permit (permit?  exqueeze me?!), no NICS check is performed in lieu of the permit being presented at point of purchase.

For folks without a CCW permit, in NC at least, a NICS check is run for the purchase of every firearm -- pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun.

Where the NICS check is mandatory, regardless, it is run for every gun purchase.
