I also note a conspicuous absence of any large scale criminal activity. Compare and contrast with New Orleans.

That was mentioned on one of the AoS threads I linked earlier.  One commenter said, "Where's the picture of the guy walking down the flooded street with the homemade raft full of looted sake?"

Another linked to this photo of violence and disorder at a shelter.

...As to the earth's axis changing by 4 inches I would like to hear an explanation as to how that can be caused by an earthquake. And, just for fun and because I enjoy twisting the eco-weenies' tails, did the shift improve or make worse the catastrophic global warming situation?...

You already know the answer Trap. Of course, it made it worse. Infinitely worse. And if we don't impose draconian socialism immediately, the consequences will be unimaginable.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Karl Denninger has a post up at the Market Ticker:

On The Japanese Quake and Tsunami

Quote
The reality of our modern life is that we must have energy production if we intend to have a vibrant economy.  All forms of energy production come with risk, whether it's due to the risk of chemical exposure in various forms or radiation.  When these systems operate normally they do not harm people, but industrial accidents happen, even without the forcing factor of Mother Nature coming into play.

We must accept these risks if we are to enjoy our modern way of life.  Despite the ongoing challenges in Japan today, I would fully support a nuclear power plant being constructed 10 miles upwind of my home, just as I fully supported offshore drilling out my back window even after the BP well disaster.  We have no right in this country to demand consumption of resources we are unwilling to develop ourselves, and for which we are unwilling to accept the risks.

I choose both the risks and the rewards, and strongly urge others to do so as well.

Jeesh.  Even Fox is going apenuts on the nuclear scare.  It's all over their front page!

http://www.foxnews.com/

The more this gets hyped, the more Trap's prediction will be a reality.  It will really make sober relevant discussions on nuclear energy exponentially difficult.  Hard to divorce emoting types from their hysteria!

Start buying candles and generators NOW. BP stopped drilling cold. This will stop any construction of nuclear power plants into the next century if this asshat of a president has his way.

Drudge has headlined that a sixth reactor has lost its cooling capability. I think that we will probably know within the next 24 to 48 hours whether or not this is going to be a big deal. By big deal I mean something in severity between Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. Three Mile Island was a partial reactor core meltdown and there have been statements made that seem to indicate the Japanese reactors in question may have already passed that marker. The explosion was from hydrogen located outside of the containment vessel. If the containment vessel(s) is/are breached then we have something closer to resembling Chernobyl.

As Vice President Dimwit would say, "That's a big f'ing explosion."

Japan's population is 127 million. ( see http://www.bing.com/apps/geography/search?domain=geography&loadExperience=1&q=population+japan&qpvt=population+japan ) At the present time, the loss to life there is estimated at 10,000. I think it will certainly rise to 20,000.

Imagine a proportional disaster in the U.S. resulting in casualties of around 49,000. This is not quite biblical proportions, but a huge loss just the same.

The problems we face today are there because the people who work for a living
are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

..."That's a big f'ing explosion."

Explosions at nuclear plants is just one o' those things you never wanna see happen. You have to start dreadfully praying for best-case scenarios at that point.

I haven't posted much if at all on this thread.........

I guess I am still shocked at the magnitude of the destruction. Hard to put that into words for me........

The potential for more damage and destruction seems to be going up instead of down.

Before and after photos of the areas hit by the tsunami.

/hat tip Tami at AoS

Yes, hemm, I've noticed that many of the blogs I visit have been strangely quiet this weekend.

Oh, for crying out loud.

A commenter at AoS said yesterday, "Japan has hit for the cycle with disasters."

Tangentially, an interactive map of nuke plants in US.  There are also links to a world map.  Didn't know we had so many.

Many are deactivated, but you have to click on the dots to find that out.  For example, In MN, we only have Monticello & Prairie Island in operation.
