The Name says it all....
« on: March 31, 2012, 08:33:45 PM »
Hello, I am S0N_of_Trapeze. I am a 20 year old active duty service member currently deployed in Afghanistan. I am new to political forums and so I will not be posting much. Here in Afghanistan, my job is to make sure that my unit's CH-47F helicopters (Chinooks, or "Hookers") up in the air bringing fresh supplies to the infantry and humanitarian aid to the local nationals. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have concerning life here or even how some of the governments discisions are affecting military personnel and I will answer to the best of my ability. God bless the United States, the values it was founded on and all those fighting to preserve those values!  ::USA::

Hey, buddy.
In a doomsday scenario, hippies will be among the first casualties. So not everything about doomsday will be bad.

Hey, trap, do I have to ban this hyeah troll?   ;)

I thank you for your service as well.

So, SON, how ARE some of the governments discisions are affecting military personnel?  What is morale like?  I'm aware you may not be able to speak as frankly as you'd like, but we are concerned for all y'all's morale and welfare.

Ban? No. He's already banished to the armpit of the third world.

Word is that he does get to come home for a couple of weeks at the end of April, though.

Just about a month away, then.  Good deal.

That was my attempt at a rejoinder. It's late and I'm tired.

Some perhaps useful information: He is on duty from 2PM to 2AM (Afghan time). It's on the other side of the planet so it's about twelve hours different from us (depending on your time zone). So when he gets off duty it's during our afternoon but it's the middle of the night over there. Can be confusing.

No problem.  He and I are on just about the same schedule then.  Due to Gunsmith's full-time occupation, I sleep mornings til Noon most days.

SON, chime in any time you need a listener/s.

Thank you for your service young man. Your safe return home is important to us all.

The Warrior Song
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

"S-0-t" here!

"So, SON, how ARE some of the governments discisions are affecting military personnel?  What is morale like?  I'm aware you may not be able to speak as frankly as you'd like, but we are concerned for all y'all's morale and welfare" - Pandora

Our welfare is generally pretty good. of course some of us have bad days or weeks but the average is good.
Well the most recent of their choices that have been directly felt here were the budget cuts they gave the military. if i recall correctly, the Army is sitting at around 500,000 (give or take a few thousand) service members. the government wants to cut something like 40,000 troops in the next few years. now of course, there are obvious  people to get rid of, such as, people who cannot maintain the weight standard, soldiers who have problems with drinking and vehicles, or even those who have been a certain rank a little bit too long. These soldiers only account for a small amount of number the government wants to cut, so how do they continue the downsizing legally? they increase the standards to a ridiculous level. Care of uniform, courtesy, military record, army schools... all of these things have become paramount to staying in the military. What makes this difficult, especially for a soldier like me with a very technical job, is that we have ALOT that we have to study, practice and execute just to maintain an active and relevant stance in our field. Just this year, the Army has made it impossible to advance from the rank of specialist to sergeant if you have ever failed the warrior leader course (a three week army school). this course isnt exactly easy and sometimes you have to drop out due to an injury; this is considered failing. other than this, i cannot really think of any recently passed policies that directly affect us here, but it is late and I need to do a little more research.
Thank you all for the warm welcome to the site. I am anxious to learn much about the conservative side of politics since I am well surrounded by liberals.  ::dueling::

You are surrounded by liberals, you say?!  Really?  Many have been led to believe there are many more conservative-minded military folk, than liberals.  If, when you get a minute, you can flesh that out, it'd be much appreciated.

And stay safe.   ::praying::

the average soldier is definitely more the conservative type, it just so happens that my particular company has more liberals than normal. its like that one chunk of ramen noodle flavoring that didnt quite dissolve properly. there are a few that think like i do but i have to be very careful about talking politics when i havent really been doing my homework.

Heh, I can relate a little bit to that, back in my day if your unit just happened to get a lot of inner city kids (Harlem, Roxbury, Compton...), well, they didn't exactly get raised in conservative households, but that means other units may have more politically conservative members and the majority are probably mixed.  I know whence Pan's question comes from, we'll let that flesh out over time.

In the meantime stay safe young man, we need to keep you on the good side!   ;)

God Bless!
