The problems with wind power
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:51:08 PM »
Warning to those that have weak stomachs when it comes to being lied to. There is a shortened product and then still  shorter if one doesn't have the time to consume all the data.

The problems with wind power as the thread title suggests is really to great to list them all.
1.The wind doesn't blow all the time (never when you need it).
2.The generators themselves consume plenty of power to maintain the essentials such as yaw angle(needed to keep blades at 90 degrees), lubrication pumps for cooling and heating during cool temps.
 3. Thyristors (to graduate the connection and disconnection between generator and grid) -- 1%-2% of the energy passing through is lost
4.magnetizing the stator -- the induction generators used in most large grid-connected turbines require a "large" amount of continuous electricity from the grid to actively power the magnetic coils around the asynchronous "cage rotor" that encloses the generator shaft; at the rated wind speeds, it helps keep the rotor speed constant, and as the wind starts blowing it helps start the rotor turning (see next item); in the rated wind speeds, the stator may use power equal to 10% of the turbine's rated capacity, in slower winds possibly much more.

Then there's this: http://www.aweo.org/windconsumption.html

As usual, the government has been lying to us for the last fifteen years or so to get the public to buy into this insane ancient technology that had it been reliable, some two hundred years ago, the shipping industry and navies of the world wouldn't have switched to steam power and then to diesel and finally to electric power.

I wasn't quite sure where to file this post because of it's technology/science based however it pertains to the bullsh*t fed to us by the AGW alarmists.

Another issue is that to even begin to take over from coal/oil/NG/nuclear, you'd have to literally blanket the landscape with these things. Same with solar panels. The same envirowhackos who attack conventional energy sources also attack their proposed replacements, how about that. Windmills are also controversial because they apparently kill thousands of birds per year. And ask the homeowners in Canada who have had wind farms built next to their neighborhoods against their will. The low frequency noise is apparently so bad it induces nausea.

Heh, I forgot about the birds!  But I didn't know about the noise.

There just isn't anything redeeming about these units.

Throw in the ineffieciency and high maintenance costs...

You can get cheaper KW production by burning just about anything instead!
