Getting the Jump on Memorial day
« on: May 20, 2012, 05:02:06 PM »
Today I had the privilege of doing some yardwork - at the Washington Soldiers Cemetery. This veteran's cemetery is the only one of its kind in the state of Washington and dates back to 1891.

It contains the remains of four Civil War era Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.

The Cemetery is small - about 20 acres, and rustic (which is a nice way of saying run-down.

It was an honor to pay my respects to some who gave everything for the cause of freedom.

Oh, and if you're as amazed as I was that we have a Civil War era cemetery out here in the frontier, here's a little blurb on the place: http://www.ghosttownsofwashington.com/Orting_Soldiers_Home.html

You honor their memory. What a nice thing to spend your time on.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

That is pretty cool!

I knew a guy who was part of the 1st MN reenactment organization, I used to talk to him all the time about his gear and what they've learned.  They are always mining for new articles of clothing and such, and new information about their unit and other units north and south.  Pretty awesome history with our unit too.

Wiki has a nice rundown on it, looks like it covers all the bases as far as I can tell.

Saw a quote here from Col. Joshua Chamberlain of 20th Maine fame about performance of 1st MN at Gettysburg I hadn't seen before - "They had it much tougher".  Whoa!

And our man Sherman captured the colors of the 28th VA, much wrangling about that, but hey, spoils of war and all.

Anyway, back on point...the 1st MN guy I knew said one of the things they do to honor those who served is to go around to cemeteries and see if there are veterans markers that need cleaning/restoration.  They've come across some that are so badly worn, they just fade out of history, so they try to recover what they can.  Sorry I lost touch with that guy, would like to learn more.  Might have to contact the society and see if I can track him down.  But I am embarrassed to say it was so long ago I forgot his name!
