NJ - new fines for pets not seat-belted in auto

Click it or ticket. It’s not just for people anymore — at least in the Garden State.

Quote
Police and animal control officers are authorized to cite drivers with unrestrained animals in the car. Yes, that includes the back of a pickup truck too. Violators can be fined $250 to $1,000 per offense.

Ray Martinez, head of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, just wants to avoid distracted driving.

“People actually driving with a dog or a cat on their laps. It’s not cute. It’s actually dangerous for the driver. It’s dangerous for other drivers and it’s dangerous for that pet.”

Dogs can be placed in harnesses that click right into the seat belt buckle. Cats don’t take well to harnesses for the most part, so they need to go in a carrier. And the carrier needs to be buckled down.

And the usual type suspects approve and applaud, per the comments.

Tick, tick, tick ...........

Show me the statistic: Percentage of accidents verifiably caused by the distraction of a loose pet in the vehicle.

No such numbers cited at the link. Therefore I conclude that unless they can show me otherwise, no such statistic exists - or it does, and the number is so infinitesimal that it does not justify this action.
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self-preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

I'm guessing the number is small. I know when I was in an accident the insurance claims adjuster did ask about a number of possible distractions (the accident wasn't my fault and still he asked--I assumed for data collection).

How many people have you seen with a dog in their lap?  It's so few for me, at least, that I notice it.  I see dogs riding in the rear of the car a lot but how is that any different than a person sitting in the back?

Maybe we should ban having anyone other than the driver in the car?  Oh, but that wouldn't be eco-friendly.   ::thinking::

We should all bike.

::laughonfloor::

My niece rides around with a semi-pit bull and a blue tick hound.
Strap 'em in? ::hysterical:: they eat the strap.  Only reason they
don't eat the car's cause they love her.

And,  Oh,  Hey, I don't have seat belts in the bed of my pickup, and
no, they aren't riding in the cab.  They don't love me that much.
                                                                                             ::rolllaughing::

I can't help it. ::forcryingoutloud:: It's absurd.
